Address Locator Error Message

I was trying to geocode an excel table in which I have Zip code and Address as some of its attributes. I chose " US Streets Geocode Service Online(ArcGIS Online) Locator and got this error message: " The address locator is damaged. Resource is not available, regardless of authorization".
Can you tell me what I have to do to fix this problem?

I just got this problem fixed. I have 10.1, and was able to get a trial subscription that comes with 200 credits: enough for 5000 geocoding matches (someone had it backwards when they said 1000 credits for 40 matches--not true, but the opposite).

The customer service rep provided me with an .xml and some instructions. Go through the rather simple process and get to geocoding again...at least for a while.

I'm still testing alternatives, because we have no immediate plans (or money) for purchasing credits.

I know what you mean-although we have plenty of credits, the new World Address Locator never has worked for us and no one seems to know why!

So if you hypothetically started with 1,000 credits and you only geocode to use credits, you could geocode 25,000 records.

ESRI Geocoding Workaround

ESRI has moved all Online Geocoders to their new credit system. Still available are their StreetMap_NA geocoders that are provided with software.

-When Choosing your Address Locator -> ESRI Data Folder -> streetmap_na -> data -> Desired Address Locator

PMoore: Can you please post that XML file that Kara from ESRI provided you? I've tried the steps in the link you provided, per the suggestion of another post-er, but that didn't work for me. I'd like to try what Kara offered you. Thank you.

Actually, I've done everything in the instructions-including the XML file and although I can get to the new World Address Locator-it still doesn't work and so far no one has been enable to tell me why...I have ESRI people working on it now and will let everyone know what happens

@jthyen: You may need to call Esri support if you don't see it. The service shows up on my end as 'World'.

I don't know if anyone in this thread is still having issues but this is what I did and it worked just fine for me.

I followed the below workflow for a client using a Windows 7 PC with ArcGIS 10 SP 5:

1. Go to http://support.esri.com/cn/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40542 and follow the workflow to Disable Default Locators that connect to ArcGIS.com

2. Go to http://support.esri.com/fr/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40802 and follow the workflow to Add the World Geocoding Service to ArcMap

This worked just fine for me, but you should probably note that using this service for batch geocoding will require ArcGIS online credits in the near future if not already. But if you are just using it for locational purposes inside ArcMap, I think it would probably work just fine. Also, I would recommend, if you have good local data, to build your own locator.

I am also on ArcGIS 10 SP5. I backed up and replaced my default locators XML with the attached version. Then when trying to add the World Geocoding Service to ArcMap, I do not see a 'World Geocode Service' to add. That connection does not contain any services at all. Also note, that I'm giving proper ArcGIS Online Subscription credentials as well.

Is there a way to change the world service to the default geocoding service on start up? When I close my map and restart ArcMap it reverts back to 10.0 North America Geocode Service (ArcGIS Online). It also makes me re-add the world service each time I open ArcMap. Manage address locators-->add-->ArcGIS Servers-->arcgis on geocode.arcgis.com-->world.

You don't need the XML file. the Geocoding and Geosearching in ArcGIS that have been in use for a long time are no longer available. These have been replaced with the Single World Geocoding service.

I always understood the credits as working the other way around. Thousands of geocode requests to 1 credit. Can anyone verify?

Also, there are plenty of free geocoding service but the issue is what kind of accuracy you need. ESRI provides matches and accuracy information in one record. That way you can weed out the poor matches. Free services will generally not do that or will limit the amount of records you can run per day.

Wow, this is a gamer changer. I have followed several different approaches to adding a new geocoder but can not geocode batch reports.

What is everyone doing instead? Can't believe they have taken away batch geocoding. I use it a lot in my organization and can't find a work around. Stinks that we already purchased the software then ESRI takes this away.

Thanks for the advice and help to everyone. I'm really new to the program and was trying to geocode some US street address and I ran into the same problem.

I followed the instructions on this page, but the only locator I have now is MGRS. Does anyone know what happened to the other locators? Can we still geocode U.S. or North American street address?

I want to thank all of the posters for discussing this ongoing issue. I became aware of the problem on Feb 6th at my university but I was unable to get a definite answer from ESRI regarding the issue. It's very
frustrating getting no answers but you have no idea about the relief that I'm experiencing right now!

I tried this with 10.1 and it did not work. It's strange this is all happening to us at the same time. So does Kara M. with Esri Technical Support from above mean they "officially retired" the address locators or basically geocoding options today? Now we have to figure out some way to buy geocoding services from them?

There's a new default locator XML file you have to download-once you get the new file, here's what to do with it (it's an e-mail from ESRI Tech Support:
This is Kara M. with Esri Technical Support regarding incident #1240876. The reason you are experiencing this error message is that we have officially retired the tasks address locators. More information regarding the deprecation of the tasks locators can be found here:To resolve the initial issue of the error message you are receiving, please follow the steps below:

1. Close out of all ArcMap and ArcCatalog sessions.
2. Download the attachment from this email.
3. Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\ArcGIS\Desktop10.0\Locators and rename the DefaultLocators.xml to DefaultLocatorsOLD.xml.
4. Copy and paste the attached file into this folder.
5. Open ArcMap and retest.

I believe that in the "near" future ESRI will require a subscription but at the time of this post if you just add the service it doesn't require a subscription or credentials.

Thanks for taking the time to post. Unfortunately the first link is for an XML file that removes ALL online locators. The second link leads to an article that eventually takes me to this page http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40802 but I cannot follow those instructions because I have Arcmap 10.0.

Following the link instructions worked just fine for my ArcMap 10.0

1.Open the Address Locator Manager.

a) Click Customize.
b) Highlight Toolbars.
c) Select Gecocoding from the toolbar menu.
d) Expand the drop-down menu on the left.
e) Click <Manage Address Locators...> at the bottom of the menu.
2.In the Address Locator Manager dialog box, click Add.
3.In the 'Look in' drop-down menu of the Add Address Locator dialog box, select GIS Servers.
4.Select Add ArcGIS Server and click Add.
5.In the Add ArcGIS Server wizard, select Use GIS Services and click Next.
6.Select Internet. Enter the server URL below. In the Authentication section add your ArcGIS Online Organizational Subscription credentials:

http://geocode.arcgis.com/arcgis/services

7.In the Add Address Locator dialog box, select 'arcgis on geocode.arcgis.com (user)' from the list of GIS Servers and click Add.

8.Select the World Geocode Service. Click Add.
9.Click Close.

I can't find the attached file you said I have to copy and paste into Locators folder. Also, in the Locators�?? folder I�??m seeing only "DefaultLocators.xsd" but not "DefaultLocators.xml"
