We have a situation where our basemap provider has occasional API outages and we're left with errors in our web maps for the missing basemap. In those situations it would be helpful if ArcGIS Online would automatically switch to another basemap from the organisational basemap selection temporarily so that maps were not left without a basemap.
We use ArcGIS Enterprise primarily. Our data is hosted in our data center but we still use Esri's basemaps. We sometimes lose our internet connection and all of our maps stop working until the internet comes back up. We do have a simple basemap that I created using our own data and it would be very helpful to have our maps automatically switch to it when the Esri basemaps cannot be reached.
Failover/backup services are not just good to have, they are crucial in some use cases.
Was this the OS on Friday @AnneTetley and, if so, is your org a member of the PSGA?
Yes, we're signed up to the PSGA and this is the 2nd time we've had a substantial outage from ordnance survey which impacts hundreds of maps, internally and public facing.
In this instance we were looking at building a notebook to replace the affected basemaps temporarily, but in the end I used it to identify where the OS basemaps were used in public facing maps and I manually switched them to an ESRI basemap. I would much rather that AGOL and Enterprise just switched temporarily to the next available organisation basemap if it found an endpoint unresponsive.
Internally we advised users to make use of the basemap switcher tools in most apps and all maps. But we don't really want that to be happening in public facing maps, ideally it should just switch automatically.
Aside from OS, and I think it's the same north and south of the border, do you have access to the ViaEuropa map stack?
Wasn't aware of the viaEuropa maps, is that a paid service? We are happy to use the ESRI GB Topographic basemap in most public facing maps, we just need a little more building level detail for some specific public facing maps and for most internal maps, so OS is ideal for that. We've used Open Street map in some cases as it was more up to date than OS where we've had a lot of redevelopment.

I'm north of the border, before PSGA we had OSMA (same thing just earlier). ViaEuropa provide mapping and api services to PSGA members, so it's all part of being a PSGA member.
Within our api calls, I do have to manipulate the url to reflect the Scottish over English address. I could be wildly wrong, but I did think ViaEuropa supplied mapping services to us all (but I could be wrong and it's GeoPlace in England). Apologies if I am wrong, but it's certainly something to check out.
As mentioned, I use the ViaEuropa services for all our basemaps (with the mentioned exceptions) using the OS hub and apis for other data sources, most notably the NGD and ADBP products. ViaEuropa offers the full OSMM stack and other services.
