Can't add new Template in Field Maps Designer after adding new List/Domain item

Why can't I add a new editing Template in Field Maps Designer? I have added a new item to a field's List, updated that layer's Symbology in the web map, but then it does not automatically appear in Field Maps Designer, and I can't figure out how to add it manually.

I have a couple bonkers work arounds, one of which includes open in Web Map classic, which kills my newer symbols... Seems like this should be possible in Field Maps Designer so I must be missing something.

You will want to test this on a copy as I haven't tried it since the latest "Update...".

Only way I know in AGOL to modify the editing template is with Map Viewer Classic.

Once loaded, choose "Edit", select the template you want to modify and choose "Manage":

Then you will see a dropdown with Properties:

You can Copy one of the exiting templates to a new one, then modify the new template properties as desired and "SAVE CHANGES" at the bottom.

Then, exit Map Viewer Classic and do NOT save changes to the map so it doesn't kill your symbols, popups, etc.

Yup, this is pretty much exactly what I do! I usually open the layer in a new, blank, Map Viewer Classic and do the update there. Sometimes it will ruin the symbology at the layer level, which I don't love as I often use the same layers across multiple maps. In those cases, I can go back to my original, untouched, "new version" Map Viewer map as save the layer that is in there to get the symbology back to the layer level.

I have also added editing templates by updating the layer definition in REST.

I just have to believe there's a way to do it in the new Map Viewer or Field Map Designer... @JeffShaner, sorry yours is the only name I know from reading blog posts (also just randomly tried to use @ and was surprised to see it worked!). Any insights on this?

Unfortunately still haven't found an easy way to accomplish this in Field Maps Designer or the new Map Viewer in AGOL.

I can't even change it in Map Viewer Classic anymore (which used to be my workaround). Only 1 layer exposes its template, every other layer is no longer "modifiable".

Hi @jdelprete ! I know you posted this a little while ago but since the conversation has continued, I wanted to comment on the latest expectations with Templates. The way that has been noted to accomplish this (managing the templates with full editing control in Map Viewer Classic) is still the recommended way at this time.

But there are updates being made to the Templates experience within Field Maps Designer, some of which will be seen at the next ArcGIS Online update (Nov 2024). This particular situation may not be fully addressed then, but more updates are coming in 2025 that will works towards making these changes possible in Field Maps Designer. The Field Maps team has been working closely with the Map Viewer team to make this all come together, as it relies on both products for a fully fleshed out experience. Don't hesitate to reach out to me in the coming months if you would like to discuss further!

If you add a prior step to set the layer's Visualization then it will use that as a default and there will be no symbology wipe.

I'm replying to this topic as i want to follow the development of a solution. Not only is this a concern but one that I am struggling to understand is still not been addressed. As map viewer adoption continues map viewer, i am fearful when if ever will classic functionality be fully integrated. We ran into this exact scenario today. The solution was even though it appeared in the template in Map Classic Viewer, it did not appear in Field Map Designer nor Map Viewer. To get it to appear i had to go into Classic Editor Full enabled > manage > then save a new dummy copy of something,. after that it appeared in designer. I went back and deleted my "Temp" feature type called lafjaksdfjasfalkf Name / Status=w30r23840242 and it appeared. I assume that hitting SAVE or modifying any content in that window would make it appear in field map designer. There still the odd Symbology problems but seems to work. Even now it says Must match 1 of the options. Will be troubleshooting though something that should be easy.

Hi all,

Update: In Spring 2025 we added support for managing templates in Map Viewer in ArcGIS Online. You'll see this in Enterprise 11.5 as well.

You can find the Templates button in the Configure editing menu.

We also added a new feature in both Map Viewer and Field Maps to alert you when the symbology and templates are out of sync. You can click the Update button to automatically sync them. Don't hesitate here- you can always Undo the changes if you need to.

I am having issues with the editor template not syncing. Using the "update" when the template sync alert came on has worked in the past. With the most recent update, it is no longer giving that alert and providing an opportunity to update the template sync. I also can't use Map Viewer Classic as a workaround anymore as it is retired. I found the solution to my own problem. From Map Viewer I deleted the template options (you have to leave at least 1 existing), saved and then went back into the template configuration and it gave the option to sync template. After syncing the ones I previously deleted, I deleted the last one that was not synced, saved and they were repaired. I then saved the layer and it pushed the template to all other maps the layer lived in.
