Map Viewer Classic - Map notes - time enabled map layers

I am trying to create a map of Anglo-Saxon Britain with ArcGIS Online in Map Viewer Classic. I have started by using the freehand tool in Map Notes to draw out the area for the Kingdom of Sussex. I have saved that as a featured layer.

The next step would be to add time information, when it started and when it was taken over by other Kingdoms until England became unified.

Before I continue and plot the other Kingdoms I thought I would check the I am tying to do something that is achievable. I am using the free version.

I have looked at the help and tutorials but have not yet found how to add time to a map note.

Each Kingdom will be a seperate layer.

I suspect I am trying to do something that is not possible this way.

Any help would be appreciated.

Map Notes cannot be made time aware. You would have to publish this as a hosted feature layer in your case and make it time aware.

If you saved the map notes layer it will be a feature layer but wont be hosted. You will need to publish a hosted feature layer in that case. After its publish you can enable time on the layer.

Free version will not support publishing these layers. If you had access to an enterprise server you could publish there and bring those layers into a web map with your free account.

I think I have added it as a feature layer in the next level. Can you point me in the direction of how to make that layer time aware?

Thanks for your help on this.

I think I am missing some basic steps though. I am very much a learner, mainly using StoryMaps.

Anglo-Saxon Britain with ArcGIS Online in Map Viewer Classic.

Almost like having a county described by its boundary and that boundary changes over time and merges with other counties.

Do I need to create shapefiles for each area? Can I do that in ArcGIS Online? The help files seem to keep pointing to desktop. Can I create the shape using Map Notes, save it as a feature layer then create a shapefile for that point in time? Amend the boundaries, and save again?

Then, how to get this all into a hosted feature layer?

Over time all of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms merged to become England.

All of the initial areas plotted using Map Notes and added as feature layers. Just where to go form here to bring it to life.

You will need to publish that layer as a hosted feature layer to have time capability. You would need to have an organizational account that supports publishing these hosted feature layers. The map notes and shapefiles fall under feature collection type layer and do not support time. You can publish hosted feature layers from both of these.
