Update legend

How can I automatically update the legend as new field value appears when rendering using that field? I have a feature that I render using the type field. The initial value is '1' but that can change with time to values ranging from 1 to 10. I would like to render the different values as they change. The legend only allows me to render based on the existing value of that field.
