ArcGIS Pro 2.8 fails to Clone Default Environment

How do you know when I upgrade Pro to a new version? I post a new thread on creating a clone...

I tried to clone the default to my 'clones' directory and that fails. I try to clone the default using the ArcGIS Pro path, and that fails.

I try to do a conda install in the default env of spyder and that fails

I try to do a pip install of spyder in the default env and that fails.

Oh my... This sounds more like a rant than a question...

Here's the latest on this situation: when trying to clone the default 2.8 env it gets hung up on something called bapy and then eventually fails with the time out messages. That package is some sort of python utility that when googled, you'll see it's available as a pip install, but not with a conda install.

I cannot explain why I was able to clone the default env on my laptop at home, but I have un-installed pro 2.8 and re-installed 2.7 and patched to to 2.7.3 here at the office. The bapy package is not installed in 2.7.

The good news is not only am I able to clone the default env, but it recognizes my clone from the previous install of 2.7 and I'm back up and running with my IDE of choice.

Maybe "esri" not "Esri"???

I use a "condarc" file to hold settings, including "channels" and environments and packages, so that I can use miniconda and it still finds the stuff installed by Esri. It looks like this right now. (I installed Pro in C:\ArcGISPro because I really hate pathnames with spaces in them.)

next I tried "conda activate newarcpy" and started python.

Then I checked to see if I can use it in ArcGIS Pro 2.8 and in VSCode

I noticed that it decided to create the new environment into C:\ArcGISPro\bin\Python\envs instead of the AppData\Local\ESRI\conda\envs place that it used to use < 2.8. Since I nuked the old C:/Program Files/ArcGIS/ folder I wonder if your problem could be that the permissions are wrong on your envs folder?

It looks like they fixed the problem with not being able to write into the envs folder that is created during installation.

I was working with our IT guys on it and I'm waiting to hear back from ESRI Tech Support as well. I created an environment manually with conda, and then tried to install the arcgis package there and it failed:

Just for * and giggles I tried to install spyder with an install command and it worked as expected. I'm not sure what to make of any of this.

Cut and paste the URL into a browser and try it. If it's blacklisted you will get the error there too.

99% of the time it's a permissions issue not the error that's reported. It's trying to overwrite a file that an admin installed or download to the wrong place or something like that.

Can you run conda from the command line?

"conda env list" to get a list of environments and then

conda update -n "name" for example "conda update -n arcgispro-py3"

I was not able to run conda at 2.8 but I use the bash shell not a regular Windows shell. I kept getting an error insisting that I run "conda init bash" which would then fail. I gave up and installed "Miniconda3" then set it up to use that version instead of the one that came from Esri. It's the same release "3.9.2" but the Miniconda3 version actually works in bash. That's why I think Esri left out some files, or changed them.

Sometimes running from the command line just works, other times it gives an error message that is not incomprehensible.

When the cloning process fails I can hover over the red exclamation error indicator and see what the problems are. I get the same error 5 times for 5 different packages:

An HTTP error occurred when trying to retrieve this URL.

Not sure if this is a blacklist problem from our network guys or what, but a 'simple retry' did not get me 'on my way'....

Don't switch to VSCode, you are comfortable with Spyder. Forget I said that. 🙂 Use what works for you.

I think having to install Miniconda to get conda to work from my bash shell was a bit of a hack but worked for me. I have to have bash to function else I would just retire early.

That process worked to get an old environment working.

Basically what they are saying is,

1 dump the lists of packages from the old environment,

2 clone the latest 2.8 one

3 throw the list(s) of old packages at the clone using update

I did not try to filter out and select the packages that I added, I just threw the whole list at it and let it decide, and it worked. I did not try the "pip" steps because I generally avoid pip and use only conda.

There is no "pinned" option on the "conda create" command so I skipped that.

Then I went into ArcPro and selected the new no longer broken environment and opened a Python window and did "import arcpy". Looks like it worked.

I did a clone inside Pro and then activated it from the command line using my functioning Miniconda version of conda and then did a plain "conda install spyder" and it worked. I launched it but did not try it out, I might like it and have to stop promoting VSCode.

This is an aside, but really, stop using Spyder, use Visual Studio Code. I am a diehard Linux/Open Source guy but VSCode is far and away better than Spyder even though it comes from Microsoft. I could write a book on why it's better. I won't because I want to upgrade my conda environments instead, before 5. 🙂 I used Spyder for about a year before someone told me the same thing.

I think they left a bunch of files out of the conda installation. I was not able to get it to work correctly from a bash shell environment, it forced me to run "conda init bash" which installed lines in .bash_profile that were hopelessly broken. I installed Miniconda and got that to work from the shell. It is the same version (3.92) but I was able to get it working.

In that funky environment manager in Pro 2.8 I have the one working environment and all the ones I built showing "broken" like yours. I was able to clone arcgispro-py3. On my first try I used the "Clone Default" but that failed. I deleted the broken folder from the command line then tried again from the box over there on the right next to "arcgispro-py3". That worked.

I was able to successfully delete one of my "broken" ones from their GUI. What I really want is to fix them.

I tried running update, for example "conda update -n arcgispro27-vscode --all". Running it once was not enough... for kicks I ran it a second time and it found more stuff to do. I have no idea if that's normal. On the second try it actually tried to help me, it said

The version of the binaries in the active Python environment do
  not match the version of the binaries of the ArcGIS Pro application.

Active environment version : 2.7
arcgispro-py3 environment version : 2.8

To create a new environment that is up to date with arcgispro-py3:
 1. Generate a list of additional packages installed in your current environment,
    with the conda command:
        > conda env export > env.yaml
 2. (Optional) If you have additional dependencies installed through pip,
    find those with pip freeze:
        > pip freeze > requirements.txt
 2. Create a new environment by cloning arcgispro-py3, and activate it:
        > conda create --clone arcgispro-py3 --name my-env --pinned
        > activate my-env
 3. Add back missing conda packages from your current environment:
        > conda env update -n my-env -f env.yaml
 4. (Optional) Add back missing packages from pip:
        > pip install -r requirements.txt
 5. (Optional) Make it the default for the ArcGIS Pro application and the
     "Python Command Prompt":
        > proswap my-env

I'm going to ponder that now. It's not 5pm yet and what a fun Friday task this is!

I'm not cloning my clone: That screen cap shows that when I use ArcGIS Pro to clone the default it fails. I've got that page open already and trying to create one with conda...

cloning your clone won't work, you will need to update all your packages. If you want to do this you should do this through conda. You can create an environment with the packages you need and they will be up to date (see conda create and create from a yaml )

That is what I do for every x.1 to x.2 . House cleaning is good and it takes less time. IF you have a laptop, you can even do it from a beverage patio on a Friday 😉

Clean install from the *.msi after toasting all vestiges of esri folders, then start from there, is my usual 😉
