seeking feedback into Map colour bars and heat map grid algorithm

I have been using PowerBi to plot up well performance (oil, water,gas) and water injection for an waterflood oilfield. The data is from Energy Components via Azure data lake

Power Bi is fantastic for the data trending wrt graphs/trends- but I'm really disappointed with the bland look and feel of this data when mapped up in the current mapping options. It would appear that I can only change the size or the colour of my bubbles. The heat maps are also really poor - I would like further information about what gridding algorithm is being used. I work at Chevron and we have the Enterprise ArcGis license - so I have no problems with the spatial data that I need pipelines, lease boundaries, well locations etc.

I have been using Petrosys for map generation for years and can make arc quality maps with beautiful colour bars, and many options with gridding (krigging etc) I can clip grids. However I want the Petrosys quality maps with the data contained within PowerBi.

I've just watched the recent webinar

Make Beautiful and Accurate Maps within Microsoft Power BI with Esri’s ArcGIS for Power BI (directionsmag.com) and whilst interesting, doesn't look like there's any improvement in my request. I'd like to reach out to the Esri specialists Anthony Latini or Andrew Shauffer. I would add in attachments of what I'm looking at in PowerBi and what I can create in Petrosys with the same data - but the nature of the well production data precludes me.

Hello there Chris,

Thank you for the post. Although I am not able to comment on the actual algorithm being used to assign colors, I can comment that there are quite a few enhancements or defects in support regarding improving symbiology as well as color selections. BUG-000129922: The custom symbology in ArcGIS Maps for Power BI changes back to the default color ramp after an external filter is applied comes to mind since it allows the most customization.

ArcGIS for PowerBI also inherits the symbology of reference layers so long as the layer itself is saved with the symbology.

Regardless, I do recognize that this is a major growth point in the product. If you would like to be added to the defect above, I would encourage you to log a case with Esri Tech support and ask your account to be added to that defect.

We gave up with all but simple county maps in PowerBi.

We worked with ESRI tech support last week and it seems that PowerBi works directly with the rest endpoint of a Webmap and ignores the custom popups that are part of an AGOL web map. It also could not read an ESRI date field and rounded a lot of fields.

Also we use custom polygon maps but these would only publish with an added lat long point layer.

It also uses Tooltips with a hover event that are not WCAG Web accessible but there is no way to turn this off.

I suspect some of these issues are from PowerBi's software limitations.

Overall the look and feel of the map was fuzzy and poor. So we gave up and decided that AGOL creates better maps than PowerBi and we will use those in custom ArcGISJavascript web applications that are linked to our dashboard.
