I'm kinda inspired to hack into the overview map. The clients I've worked with who expressed interest in OverviewMaps want features that I haven't teased out of them yet. I end up creating a second map with custom layers, zoom scales, and features that they want.
Is there any difference memory or performance-wise between loading an overview map and creating a second map?
So far I have not noticed any performance or memory issues. It's basically equivalent to what you are probably already doing, but with the extent graphic and linked panning/zooming already built in. My next task was to try and change the little arrow graphic used to toggle the OverviewMap, I just haven't gotten that far yet.
I've considered trying to override the image arrow that displays for the overview map. My apps are for field workers on devices like iPads and Androids and I don't think that the arrow is easy to touch on those devices.
