Related Records not appearing in Explorer for ArcGIS

So we finally upgraded to the latest version of the explorer app on iOS (v.17.1.2 of app running on iOS 10.3.3), serving up maps from our Portal for ArcGIS instance through a VPN to the device. One of the things we were keen to make use of (and part of the reason for the upgrade) was the related records capability, of which we have quite a few. However, when I interrogate those map layers containing related records I do not see them. Are there any specific requirements for this to work, or has anyone else come across similar issues?

Hey Dan,

I worked with Mervyn on this issue we found a few bugs with related records (as well as a bonus issue) -- here are the results:

BUG: Related data not showing when layers published as services with primary or foreign key hidden
- Workaround: Unhide PK/FK and republish service. Hide PK/FK in popup configuration if do not want to show
BUG: Related data not showing when definition expression applied to the layer while publishing
- Workaround: Export layer with definition expression into it's own feature class and republish service
BUG-000106749: Layers do not load with “Item does not exist or is inaccessible” after copying content between environments OR if the Map Service item added to Web Map is no longer accessible.
- Workaround: Use a tool like ago-assistant to remove the invalid "itemId" parameter from the layer's JSON

Support for related records is currently not available with Explorer for ArcGIS. It is under consideration for future release. You could vote-up this idea https://community.esri.com/ideas/12518 .

Are you able to view the related records in web browser of ArcGIS Online?

As mentioned in OP we use Portal for ArcGIS and not AGOL but yes, we have always been able to view the related records there, it just appears to be in the mobile app that this isn't appearing...

Hi Daniel,

You are correct, accessing related records is supported in our current version of Explorer. Currently we support getting related records from the origin feature to the destination feature only. So, for example - you can tap on a Hydrant and get it's inspections, but not the reverse (presuming the relationship set up with Hydrants as the origin and Inspections is the destination)

Is it possible this is what you are running into? And that if you tap the feature in the other layer, you do actually get related info? If this is the case, and you would like to have this additional support - it would be great to hear more about this requirement and your particular workflow so we can understand your use case.

Whether it's this case, or something else we'd like to hear more about it. If you could email Explorer4ArcGIS@esri.com with the details of either scenario that would be great. Then we can get into the details there.

Thanks for the information, we did wonder if the problem was that we had configured the relationship class to go in both directions (forwards and back), so we altered the relationship class to just go forward, but we are still not seeing anything in the output. I've attached a screenshot of the relationship class below, is there anything else that might cause it to fail?

Hi Joel,

I've marked this as the correct answer (the second bug), although it is a bug rather than our problem being solved. Unfortunately we can't export the layer with the definition query and republish as this would significantly alter the architecture of our data model.

Marking my response as the correct answer will allow other users to determine if this is the same issue that they are running into. Once I get the official BUG numbers from support I will edit my response above to include them. This will make it easier for other users who want to be attached to the BUGs in order to track developments progress.

I understand the workarounds are not ideal, but I wanted to include them in case someone needs to get around this bug asap. We are well aware of the issues and are working diligently to get them addressed!

Is there a requirement for the service to be a feature service? or can it be a map service?

Joel, we are having the same issue with Explorer. Our example is one point feature class related to another point feature class. In this case it is streetlights related to a Work Request with a GPS location. Popups for both feature classes work in Portal, however users cannot click on a light and see the related work requests. We would prefer to not symbolize the work request and have users access them through the light as a related record.

Published using ArcMap 10.2.1 (as a map service only, not a feature service)

PK/FK has been turned on, the other two workarounds are not an option for us.

No definition queries defined in the publishing map.

There is a known issue where the related data will not be returned if the Map Service is added to the map by the map service root url. Can you try adding the streetlights and work request layers to a map by the map service layer (ie "https://.../MapServer/4" & "https://.../MapServer/5") to verify this is the issue you're running into?

Yes, that fixes it. Having the details on here will hopefully help someone else experiencing the same issue as it's not clearly documented anywhere else. I was told that using related tables with map services (vs. feature services) is not considered supported in Collector b/c Collector's primarily use is to edit [feature services].

Thank you Joel. Technically that does resolve the issue. I am able to view related tables in popups by adding the map service layer. I need to do some more testing to see the overall impact of this for our production mapping environment. In our most used web application (and Explorer map) we have a map with 7 map services feeding the map, and up to 41 layers in each map service...

Hi Joel,

I have the same problem of "the link of related records are not shown on Explorer". In the last a few days, I worked with ESRI tech support and could not find what is problem and therefor, could not find a way to get around it. We have tried the followings:

1. Make sure the PK/FK are not hidden or nothing is hidden and not definition for all the feature classes and tables: Not working!

2. stripped complex feature type (geometry network): not working

3. Remove all but one feature class and one related table, then republish: Not working

4. download data from ArcGIS Online, then republish the downloaded data without change the contents: it seems worked!

5. Created a new FGDB and imported feature class and related table from the original FGDB, then publish it: not working

6. Run the validation and found there are some invalid data (not consistent with domain value), fixed it: still not working

Although #4 worked, but we still do not know what is the problem with the original FGDB. We certainly do not want to try to "publish-download-republish" as a preferred workflow. Because ESRI text support have my data, is it possible to let your developer take a close work of the possible problem?

Hi Joel,

Any update on this? I am having the same issue as others have described above:

I have a feature class with a related table. I am using definition queries on a field so that the feature class shows up as several different layers in my map service. Everything looks good in ArcGIS Online. For every layer that originates from the same feature class, the pop-ups return related records. In Explorer, however, the related records do not return. I have attempted all of the workarounds listed above and none of them work or are possible in our environment.

Collector and Explorer are case-sensitive. Do the cases of the Primary and Foreign Keys in the relationship class match the case of the primary and foreign key field names in the tables? There can also be problems if you have published your map service w/ custom layerIDs.

There is an issue with related fields not showing in the Collector popup. Example showing a count of how many related records. Shows in web map, but in Collector just shows "-". This is using a hosted feature service.
