Can not connect to ArcGIS Online

I have installed ArcGIS 10, however the option to sign in is greyed out in the File menu. If I click on ArcGIS Online from the File menu the ArcGIS Online box appears, it waits about 2 minutes and then says "unable to connect to the remote server".

I have tried putting in my username / password into the proxy settings in ArcCatlog, but there was no difference. I just want to use Bing Maps as a base layer. Has anyone else had this issue?

If you're having proxy issues, I'd suggest you contact Esri Technical Support.

However, you don't need to sign in to add a Bing basemap. Choose File > Add Data > Add Basemap and choose the basemap you want. Alternatively just go to the ArcMap Basemaps group in ArcGIS.com http://links.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/en/arcmap/layers and click Open next to the one you want.

I am having this problem also. I am behind a very secure firewall. I have tried adding user name and password in ArcCatalog, but no luck and I'm not sure what to do next.

Hi all. I just downloaded and applied the service pack and ... no luck. Still get the same error. Whats unfortunate is that there is no indication as to what site its attempting to access so I cannot test it through a web browser.

I'm sorry the patch didn't fix the problem for you. We need more information about your particular configuration, network, etc. to help narrow down the problem. Can you please contact Technical Support and describe the problem you are having? They are better able to help narrow it down than we can do on the forums.

I still have this problem also. I also don't see an alternative to the forums because I am told that as a user of the Education Edition I am not entitled to support. I am trying to evaluate ArcGIS 10 for use in a graduate-level course this spring, but unless I can get this to work soon I'll stick with MapInfo for another year.

Instead of using the File Menu / ArcGIS Online operations, add the resource (http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services) as an ArcGIS Server Internet Resource within ArcCatalog, then add the basemap of your choice from the list of services provide.

What exactly are you trying to do? While there is a problem connecting directly to arcgis.com from ArcGIS desktop, perhaps there is some workaround to the specific thing you are trying to do that we can provide for you.

Can you open the basemaps in ArcGIS Desktop 10 by using the links here:
http://www.arcgis.com/home/group.html?owner=esri&title=ESRI%20Maps%20and%20Data&content=all

If you cannot access these services through the URL's, I'd strongly encourage you to share the URL's to the services with your IT Department. It is very possible that they are getting blocked internally.

Still no luck.

My IT person was questioning the connections tab in ArcCatalog options - why the address and port must be imported from Internet Explorer and cannot be entered directly. He thought this was likely to be a source of the problem.

Here is the actual response from my IT support:

"it appears that the ArcGIS application doesn't know the proxy address/port. Therefore it cannot properly access the proxy server. Please advise us when ArcGIS responds to your question. I suspect the resolution may be as simple as setting an environment proxy variable or a command line switch."

A user in a different part of my institution provided the answer. My proxy settings in Internet Explorer (Tools-->Internet Options-->Connections-->LAN Settings) needed to be tweaked for the app to work, even though they were adequate to run IE.

I'm just wondering how you were able to connect to the internet through other applications, like a web browser, without this proxy information set on your system. IE, Chrome and Firefox will all use this system setting by default. So perhaps you manually configured it for your browser as well or you weren't using a web browser from this computer?

I still have this problem.

I am using ArcView 10.0 Service Pack 3 through a proxy.

I have tried changing Internet Explorer proxy settings from 'automatically detect' to the actual proxy details. In both cases Internet Explorer can connect but ArcView cannot.

The ArcGIS connection test (File>Sign In...>Trouble Connecting?) shows the following (connection.png attached).

when I try ArcGIS online, i get the error shown in (ArcOnline.png attached). When I try to add a base map using File>Add Data, I get a blank window but no errors.

I am able to log in ok through ArcView File>Sign In...

I still have the same problem. With serivce pack 4 'Add Basemap' shows an empty dialog. Arcmap10 crashes when I try to sign in to ArcGIS online. I can't even send an error report to ESRI. My workaround with service pack 3 used to be to download basemaps (open never worked) from the ESRI web site and then add it to ArcMap. With service pack 4, ArcMap hangs when I try to do this.

Proxy settings work fine for all other programs (IE Expl., Firefox, R, Dropbox etc.)

Also, ArcMap works fine when I use a private network without proxy.

I had something of the opposite problem (ArcGIS v10, SP5): I am not using a proxy server, nor is a proxy server set in IE or ArcCatalog, yet ArcMap would always ask me for a proxy log-in.

The solution I found in the end was: IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Automatically detect settings = OFF / unticked (it had been ON / ticked).
