Build ArcMap functionalities

Question

Hello, i'm making a program in vb.net which has to interact with a map. But i have many problem to:

- connect my database to application via ArcSDE

- create feature class and add shapefile to AxMapControl

- customize arcmap toolbox functionalities in visual basic express.

Please i need some help.

should i leave Sql Server to use Postgre SQL? I read that, it is more useful than SQL Server in geographic data management.
