Field length at 8000 from excel table with over 27000 entries

Question

I need to add an excel table with over 27000 entries with XY data to ArcMap. The field length is showing a value of 8000 no matter what I do to the table, I tried reformatting the field length in excel but it still gives me trouble when I add the XY data. Does anyone know a fix to this problem?

The field isn't 8000 characters long I take it then

What else have you tried?

Did you try copying to a new file?

making a new field and copying the first X character to it?

Anything else?
