How we can open and edit .mxd/.msd file

hi all

how can i open and edit .mxd and .msd file . when i click on feature access check box during creation of new service on Arcgis server .i get error "unable to start service ..."
so is it possible to use .mxd/.msd file for feature layer data editing . or it required ArcSDE .

You can use .mxd/.msd to define a feature service but it does require SDE (or an hosted feature service with the latest version of ArcGIS Online).
