Table sort issue in edit

Question

I'm using arcmap 10.71‌ Desktop Basic.

Sometimes when I am in an edit session I am not able to sort the attribute table. This does not  happen all the time, when it does I can reboot the program (sometimes twice) to get that functionality back.

Any idea what is causing this and how to repair it?

This could be a bug with editing shapefiles. I would be curious on what ESRI has to say.

Still happening. The data would have  lock on it because it happens when I am editing the shapefile. Doesn't crash, I just get the error "Sorting canceled! DBF and shapefiles cannot be sorted after records have been deleted in editing mode. Please sort your table before editing"
This hasn't always been the case with ArcGIS, why is this happening now?

Does the data you can’t sort have a lock on it?

Is this still happening?

Usually ArcMap just crashes for me
