Issue with Desktop 10.2 connecting to an 10.0 SDE database.

Perhaps I am missing something or haven't found any documentation stating this is a known issue, but I am testing ArcGIS 10.2 on a VM with Windows 7, and although the prior DB connections and mapped folders were imported over from my 10.1 instance (which is a very nice new feature of the 10.2 install) when I connect to the SDE databases, I cannot view the Version Manager in ArcMap. The SDE DBs are SQL Server '08, and the SDE is version 10.0. Like I said, my apologies if this is a known issue and I just haven't found the report, but here is my official post on the issue.

Has any else ran into issues with connecting and viewing the version manager of previous SDE versions in 10.2? I do not have a 10.1 instance of SDE to test against or I would.

Another potential reason for Direct Connect to a 10.0 SQL-Server geodatabase to fail,
even with an updated Native Client, is the use of SQL-Server 2005 for the enterprise
geodatabase (SQL-Server 2005 is not supported by ArcGIS 10.2).

Now that I see your response, I remember encountering this issue with a GIS Add-In where a developer had the same error message when upgrading his Add-In at v10.2. This SQL Server Native Client install was part of the default installation back in v10.0, but is now separate. This developer had a brand new machine that never had ArcGIS Desktop v10.0 installed on it, so when ArcGIS Desktop v10.2 was installed his Add-In was looking for software that had not yet been installed. I downloaded this install package from the ESRI Customer Care site under DBMS Support Files for ArcGIS 10.2->Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client.

The issue is occurring because of an older version of SQL Server Native Client installed on that machine.

Below is a link for Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Feature Pack:

--> Open the above link
--> Expand Install Instructions
--> Look for "Microsoft® SQL Server® 2008 R2 Native Client"
--> If the Operating System of your Desktop machine is 32-Bit, download "X86 Package (sqlncli.msi)" & If the Operating System of your Desktop machine is 64-Bit, download "X64 Package (sqlncli.msi)"
--> Install the setup and then try connecting from Desktop

I am extrapolating from the behavior that I am seeing with Oracle, so I'm only guessing that SQL Server will behave the same way.

I copy the .SDE connection file from an ArcGIS Desktop v10.0 machine (or folder if you had v10.0 installed on the same machine previously). If I do not connect to the database in ArcCatalog I only get a limited number of items in the drop-down context menu (Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are not available). Once I connect to the database, Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are now available. At this point I would select Geodatabase Connection Properties to select a different version to use in my connection to the SDE database.

If I create a brand new connection in ArcCatalog at v10.2, Geodatabase Connection Properties and Administration are available whether I am connected to the database or not.

I had a similar issue with Oracle SDE connections that I copied from v10.0 to v10.2. I was unable to see some of the connection menus in v10.2 until I opened the SDE connection.

I have another issue with connecting desktop 10.2 to SDE MSSQL 10:
[ATTACH=CONFIG]29268[/ATTACH]

Can I connect to SDE 10 from 10.2, or I need to upgrade the SDE first?

Mody,

The URL you posted is what started this journey; I wanted to "see it to believe it".

The Version Manager or the Change Version window will not display inside of ArcMap. In fact, the only window that shows is the Compare Versions.

I can create a New Version and switch to that on creation. I can open the Administer Database in ArcCatalog, but nothing appears in ArcMap.

End of the world? No, but a bug (I believe) nonetheless.

No, on the Versioning toolbar, the first button is the Version Manager.

When you say Version Manager, are you referring to Administration->Administer Geodatabase and then the Versions tab when you have an SDE connection in ArcCatalog?

I did a little more testing, and when using 10.1 to connect to a 10.0 SDE DB rather than 10.2, the version manager window opens as expected. I will be installing 10.2 on the machine later today (to see if the issue has to do with it being a VM or not).
