ArcGIS Server licensing is by the server on which it runs [except when in a VM, in whichcase it's on the lesser of the CPUs on the physical host(s) or the sum of the CPUs in the virtual host(s)]. Futher licensning questions should be directed to Customer Service or your local marketing rep.- V

You cannot purchase a license for ArcSDE. Since 9.2, the ArcSDE application server is a *part*of the Enterprise ArcGIS license. However, you must run ArcSDE on the same host as ArcGISServer. If you want to run ArcSDE on a different host, you must purchase an ArcGIS Serverlicense for that host as well. You can speak with your local Esri rep if you aren't sure whatyou have or what it can do.- V
