I mean like the ArcGIS API for Javascript does (re-routing URLs to ESRI proxy).

One of the reasons for the JS API's proxy use is to get around cross-site requests, which isn't an issue with the runtime.
But otherwise you can put the proxy url in front of the service url and essentially accomplish the same thing.
