Visual Studio Update

We have an enterprise portal setup on 4 sql servers. Our database studio has an older version of Visual Studio running and I want to update. Using Enterprise 10.8.1 and ArcMap 10.8.1. Can you update the visual studio alone or do you have to update the software?
