Update ArcGIS Server Services after SQL Server Instance and/or Network File Share Change

After moving your SQL Server instance to a new server, this guide will show you how to update your ArcGIS Server services. Additionally, it will demonstrate how to update file-based services that use data from a file geodatabase, such as map and image services, after the network share has changed.

Scenario

It might be necessary for you to move your SQL Server geodatabase to a different server. The 2022 instance, for instance, might be on a different server when you upgrade from SQL Server 2019 to SQL Server 2022. With a database backup and restore, moving the geodatabase is simple. However, what about updating your ArcGIS Server services? The services will use the SQL instance name if they are referencing information from your enterprise geodatabase. This can be fixed by re-mapping the data sources in your Pro Projects/MXDs, and then re-publishing your services. But what if you have dozens, or hundreds, of services? This can be extremely time consuming. The below video will show how you can update all of your services with a couple of python scripts.

Note:

Before executing the scripts, be sure you have made a copy of the \arcgisserver\config-store\services and \arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput directories.

I went to portal and update/import all datastores manually related to old instance with new sde. that's it. nothing I did for services. services still showing old instance and was able to see the data.

We have recently migrated the content from on premise environment to cloud( Azure ) ArcGIs Enterprise 11.5 using webgis dr , which includes all sql reference data. I followed your instructions to modify old instance to a new instance using python scripts. After that , I tried to open rest service , it took me almost 3 to 5 min and it throws an error

Error handling service request :0x80004005 - No Layer or Table was initialized. in '"esriCarto.GraphicFeatureServer"'
Code: 500..

I tried to check all files including .msd compressed file , everything got updated with new instance and tried to load mapx file in to arcgis pro , it loads without any issues.

could you please advice on this? Does it work if we move enterprise to different environment?

I actually checked publishing a layer from same new instance , it worked great.

@JakeSkinner For 1) im looking at a .mapx file which has a dataConnection object, of type "CIMRelQueryTableDataConnection", which then has a sourceTable and destinationTable objects each with a workspaceConnectionString field. For 2), i cant find the specific example, but there was a case where WorkspaceConnectionString was not a direct descendant of DataConnection, and the DataConnection had a source and destination, each with a WorspaceConnectionString. It seemed easier to just search the XML for WorkspaceConnectionString entries, instead of assuming there was always one under a DataConnection ?

Hi @AdamPigg, thanks for the feedback. I did recently execute this for a customer and noticed the unnecessary loops, but haven't had a chance to dig back into this. For #1 and #2, how are your services published to produce the non direct descendent of dataConnection?

@JakeSkinner I had to fix a few issues in the script, here is an updated version:

1. Doesn't correctly handle case where a workspaceConnectionString is not a direct descendent of dataConnection in a featureTable entry in the JSON updater

2. In the XML updater, doesn't handle the case where workspaceConnectionString is not a direct descendent of dataConnection

3. The code which iterates the services does not handle sub folders correctly, resulting in many unnecessary loops processing the same services over and over (noticeable if there is a folder with many services under it)

Does it matter if I'm trying to go from a SQL 2016 instance that is running on 10.9.1.x.x geodatabase version to an SQLMI at 11.3 geodatabase version.

I can see in the old version the dataset format in portal is 'database.user.featureclass' whilst the new is 'user.featureclass'?

@JakeSkinner I figured it out. My hypothesis was correct that the xmlns:typens needs to match the original value. I changed the updateManifestMXD function so instead of using etree it just treats the XML as a text file and replaces the relevant strings. It's less robust, but works for our needs. I also added logic to avoid updating if it has a reference to our test DB just because the names overlap enough that it would cause issues.

@AdamLake2 Unfortunately, It will be difficult to update the script without a reproducible case on my end.

However, the manual way of doing this would be to extract the MSD file (i.e. using 7-zip) located at /arcgisserver/arcgissystem/arcgisinput/<service>/extracted/p**, update occurrences of the geodatabase version in all files, repackage as an MSD file, restart the service.

@JakeSkinner We are running Enterprise 11.5. The first time I tried the script, I got a lot of errors (including the dataConnection key error Joshua-Young had above -- just put that in a try-except block) but mostly in the logs when starting up server and nothing was working. I opened a ticket and the ESRI tech was not very useful, but in the process I figured the issue was related to the XML typens that was set to 10.8. I changed it to 3.5 (below) and everything seemed to work well.

What I missed in my testing that we could not overwrite services and when trying to stop services I would get an error that the service could not be stopped. I found this out after making changes in our production environment over the weekend and had to restore from backup. My current hypothesis is that our services have been published with every iteration from Desktop 10.8 through Pro 3.5 and that xmlns:typens needs to be set appropriately. Any suggestions on next steps?

@AdamLake2 looks like the geodatabase version information is stored in the MSD file, so this will need to be changed there. The script unzips the MSD file, updates the information, and then re-zips the files/directories back to an MSD file. In short, the script will need to be executed for the services to point to the other geodatabase version.

@JakeSkinner I updated the datastore connection on our server yesterday to point to a different named version of our enterprise geodatabase and rebooted the server (same server and DB, just a different version). However, the services are still updating the dbo.DEFAULT version instead of the named version.

I did not run the script to update the metadata because that caused issues in our test environment.

Any suggestions on getting our services pointed to the right version?

@Hal-AhmedShehata the Update Enterprise Geodatabase Data Stores.py will only update the metadata of the services. Ex:

The script will not repoint the service to the new data source. This is done by updating the Data Store connection itself. There is no downside of not running the scripts other than seeing the incorrect database information reported in ArcGIS Server Manager (screen shots above).

@JakeSkinner thanks for the amazing solution. My question is; if I have a new non-sde postgres instance with same database name, but different username and password. Will running this script work for me? Or do I have to adjust it to include changing the username?

Importing the new connection file in my Portal data source made my map services display properly. Do I still have to run the scripts? I mean what are the implications of not running the scripts, given that the map services are displaying properly now?

Thank you for that, it is interesting. So, in terms of changing all of the registered databases, it sounds like the only way is to do each one by hand? Is that true? If I have 30 I have to create a new sde connection file and import it by hand in Pro or Manager? I am just making sure I am not missing something and I am using the correct words. Couldn't i iterate through the files in arcgisserver\config-store\data\enterpriseDatabases\ and change the json? or will that not work? -
