Upload Image files to ArcGIS Online

I'm trying to use ArcGIS REST API's AddItem operation to upload a tif file with the goal of creating or adding the item to a hosted Imagery Layer. However I keep getting the "ArcGIS Portal Directory - API Reference" page from the url. Here are the urls I've tried so far:

https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/users/{myUserName}/addItem

https://{myOrganizationsAGOL}/sharing/rest/content/users/{myUserName}/addItem

Can I really AddItem to upload local files to AGOL? If so where can I find examples?
