Layers in Field Maps Not Editable

I have created a map in AGOL with editable layers. However, even though I checked the "Make Available in Field Maps App" under the map settings, it opens in the Field Maps app as "read-only", and there are no edit options available for the individual layers. How can I make the map editable? FYI, the feature layers within the maps are already showing as editable in AGOL.

Thank you for that feedback. In the recent release of ArcGIS Field Maps v21.2 on both iOS and Android we addressed the issue where you needed to have `Use in ArcGIS Collector` enabled in order to edit in Field Maps. This should no longer be the case and you should be able to disable the use in Collector and retain the ability to edit in Field Maps.

- Are you working with the current release of Field Maps?

- Are you able to disable use in ArcGIS Collector and still edit in Field Maps if so?

I just wanted to follow-up to see if you'd been able to test what I suggested above by resaving the map to see if the ability to edit in Field Maps changes?

In general, when saving a web map that supports editing, certain keywords are added into the web map's JSON. One of the keywords being `Data Editing` that other apps including Field Maps use to allow the user to edit. The fact that that keyword wasn't written for that map despite the fact that you can edit in ArcGIS Online is the strange behavior. Therefore this is why I am suggesting resaving and disable/reenable editing in the map to trigger that keyword to get written as a test.

Good to know, this solution still works! Resaving (after copying the web map with AGOL Assistant) did the trick.

Hi @KevinBurke , we are using Field Maps in Enterprise 10.8.1 with Map Viewer Beta.

We appear to be having this same issue, where the "Canvas is empty" and acts read-only if the map contains any Public layers hosted in ArcGIS Online. It shows no configuration or editable layers available.

I tried a few different types of layers from AGOL and they all seem to cause the same problem. They are indeed visible, however, as layers in the Field Maps app without any issue -- it's just the configuration aspect that is stuck.

Thoughts?

I was having the issue of where a map could be edited in Fields map on android but not on IOS. Everything was setup correctly. The issue was I didn't have "Use in ArcGIS Collector" enabled since we are moving over to field maps. This caused some inconvenience, it really should be highlighted when selecting these options.

To add to the thread, today the edit plus sign was missing in field maps but only for one out of three users, all on iPad all using the same application. Here is what was reported from the user with the issue after I copied the map in field maps to a new document:

Here’s what I found

I’ve re-logged in as myself a few times now and the “plus sign” still doesn’t work on the original app
I logged in as myself under the copy of the APP and “plus sign” shows up
I logged in using the forestry user account in the original app the “plus sign” doesn’t work on the original app
I logged in using the forestry user account in the copy of the app and the “plus sign” shows up

Regardless of how I’m logged in the original app details indicate “Read Only”, while in the app copy details indicate “Editable”

Again this only seems to be affecting my iPAD, as everything works fine on my iPhone and no other users have reported an issue. I thought the issue might be because I’m logged in on 2 devices (iphone and ipad), but this doesn’t seem to be the case.

The only thing I did was copy the map using the copy button in field mapsand give the same group access but that was enough to fix the issue. The app worked fine the day before. Hope this helps solve what is going on in the backend.

It happens all the time to me. From what I can tell if we add a field to the service or change domain values in the service it causes the plus sign to no longer appear in field maps. Now the first thing I do, if I have an issue, is create a copy and see if the copy works. Mostly that is enough to get it working again, if not, you have to check that your editing template matches your domain and that any definition queries match your editing template on the desktop side of things and that the fieldmaps setting all work too including making sure the include "no value" is unchecked on fields with domains. For me it all seemed to be trying to get everything to match within all environments before you can get the edit button to show up. Once it does any changes might disable it and creating a copy often restores it without doing anything else.

I have just begun having the same problem Ed described, although I am not an enterprise admin and have no access to server logs or any of that. Perhaps your solution would work for me though on maps that I own, but I am having trouble following your solution prescription. You say save/resave and disable/reenable. To be clear, the save/resave refers to the Web Map, while the disable/reenable refers to the WFL, correct? So I would disable editing in the WFL, then open the Web Map and save it. Then close the Web Map, reenable editing in the WFL, then open the Web Map. What about the Field Map? Should I have deleted it? Disabled Offline Mode? What? There's more than two switches to think about here.

Re-saving seems to work but to add to the discussion the same maps work in ArcCollector but don't work in Field Maps. Re-saving them allowed them to work in both.

Your save/resave suggestion did the trick. In addition to making the map editable in Field Maps, it also made the map sharable within my AGOL organization.

As a quick test, in the map you shared with me, try disabling editing on the layer through the Map Viewer in ArcGIS Online > save the map > enable editing again > save again. Does this make a difference?

Thank you for the map. I can reproduce the same issue on my end. However when I save a copy of that map on my end, I can edit successfully. Therefore this issue still appears to be licensing related.

I would still like to try to figure out why you don't have the setting for 'Use in ArcGIS Collector', since as I mentioned before, this currently provides the ability to edit within ArcGIS Field Maps.

- You mentioned previously that you're the org admin. Are those the same set of credentials you're using to sign into ArcGIS Field Maps? If so, the role is Administrator, but what is the user type? i.e. creator, etc.

- You also mentioned previously that you do have the Field Apps bundle listed with all the apps in the org licenses section, but just to confirm, the user account you're signed in with has that license applied is that correct? If you go to 'My profile' > 'View my settings' > licenses, you should see the Field Apps bundle listed for that user.

Yes that is correct. You should be able to search for users outside the organization. Adding that user to the group will send me an invite to join the group.

I just want to review the structure of the map itself to hopefully try and narrow down what's happening.

The app launcher will not list Collector as it does not have a web app like Field Maps does. Therefore that is expected in that case.

In the original post, you mentioned opening the map in the Field Maps app. Just for clarification, are you referring to the mobile app or the web app?

Also if you go to Licenses, do you have a Field Apps section with the mobile apps listed?

Hi Kevin,

The Collector app is not blocked (no apps are in our AGOL, of which I am the administrator). Of note is that the Collector app does not appear when clicking on the App Launcher icon in AGOL, but it does appear in the list of apps in the "Block apps" setting in the Security section of Organizational Settings.
