On-line data users need to be able to read the detailed metadata for each dataset. This should be an out-of-the-box function in the web APIs.

We would love something like this so we could post reminders to update metadata for our users and also to expose available layers and date pf last update to non-gis users.

Would you elaborate on what metadata content is most important? Are you simply looking to meet federal or state standards or are you looking for a focused few elements? This would be good to know as well as what industry your working in so other users may better identify with your suggestion.
