Select in ArcGIS Online

We use a browser and ArcGIS Online for new users who are not up to mastering ArcMap. The ease of use would be enormously enhanced by a select mechanism (box select, shift click,etc.) At present, to edit the position of an item, one must double click to open the popup, scroll down and mouseclick to close the popup so you can see where you are moving it, use the hand icon (only appears after cycling the popup) and drag it to a new location. At this point it is not clear whether the position is updated - reopen the popup and close? Even after you do this, the hand icon still remains active - only by leaving edit mode or opening the popup for a different plant will the hand icon go away when near that plant.
