I talked to ESRI about these pre quarantine and asked for them to mark this down as an enhancement request. They said I needed a work case where using the ArcGIS Server Administrator wouldn't work. In the end I don't think I was successful in getting the enhancement through
In ArcGIS Desktop, we could connect to a GIS Server and Start/Stop/Restart services. I would like this functionality to exist in ArcGIS Pro as well. We have many users who are not quite ready for access to ArcGIS Server Manager but are still responsible for updating and maintaining services. Some examples:
We would prefer that these users do not have access to change service configurations outside of these functions, like editing # of instances and capabilities through Server Manager. Server Manager also shows some GIS Server settings that we definitely do want accessible by the everyday GIS user.
I tried opening an enhancement request with ESRI about a year ago for those very same reasons, but they told me the functionality is there in Server Manager so enhancement request rejected ">😐 I mentioned it's available in ArcCatalog to which they said Pro is not a replacement for ArcCatalog 🤔

I agree with this idea. Switching to arcgis enterprise web interface is a lack of time.
For example, in order to update for layer's properties, we must stop map services. Why not making possible to do so in ArcGIS Pro ?

Argument: You can do this in ArcGIS server manager.
Rebuttal: ArcMap and ArcCatalog could do it even with ArcGIS server manager. Is ArcGIS Pro incapable of such a task? One UI for the ArcGIS Professional is the mantra. For GIS admins, seems like we are missing something.
Please consider this enhancement esri because when you are managing multiple environments, having multiple browsers or tabs open while performing updates to schemas in ArcGIS Pro is somewhat inefficient and frankly frustrating. ArcGIS Pro 3.0?
I agree with @SavageTrimble .... This needs to be in pro...
I needed to stop 13 services... in catalog I can highlight them all, right-click and stop...
do you know how long that would take through server manager.... the answer is forever..... because you have to stop them one at a time through server manager....
Joe, I think we need more users submitting an office enhancement request directly to ESRI. If you have ESRI maintenance you can have one of your people put in the request and I would hope @LukeSavage has done the same.
ESRI looks at the numbers so that's how we can try to influence there decisions. When I put in the request their logic is that the AGS Server Manager web interface already does this and Pro is not meant to replace ArcMap. Everything mentioned above if very true, it takes forever!
I’m new to using Pro but I have to say I’m absolutely astounded that this functionality is missing from Pro, I thought Pro was meant to be better than ArcGIS Desktop but the first thing I try and use is missing from it! Administering services is one of the key things we use ArcCatalog for - all the time, it provides a central interface to get to all the options to manage our ArcGIS Server services. ArcGIS Server Manager with its web front end is really clunky and slow by comparison. Whilst I’m aware changing a setting such as enabling WMS would restart a service using ArcCatalog, the need in Pro to open the original map document and re-publish just to make a setting change is a huge backwards step – additionally I may not have access to the original map document to do this – not a problem at the moment using ArcCatalog.
ArcCatalog gives me everything I need to get to all the service settings and manage caches etc, ESRI please add this to Pro, as it stands you've made our jobs harder with Pro, it should be simpler with an improved product.
I built a python toolbox for ArcGIS Pro that will start or stop all services in a folder on the GIS Server. Requires a federated ArcGIS Enterprise deployment.
The GIS Server and GIS Server Folder parameters dynamically provide dropdowns based on the active Portal you are signed into, in ArcGIS Pro. DM if you're interested, I can pass it along.
FYI - working on an update for this that will allow you to select individual services in a Folder, rather than running the whole operation on every service in a selected folder. It will look something like this:

@tigerwoulds That is awesome thank you for sharing.... In my opinion, the point is we should not have to create python scripts or do anything customizing in order to perform basic administrative task we have been able to do for years using ArcMap...

I agree with this 100%. Server Manager is no way equivalent to using ArcCatalog for stopping/starting/deleting services. Especially when you're working with a dozen or more servers with services in multiple folders. In Catalog I can open all my server connections and see all my service folders in one spot. It takes a very long time to perform the same tasks in Manager, especially when you have to login to each one, and then cycle through pages and pages of services. As a web administrator I spend a lot of time in ArcCatalog, and now that I'm migrating our 200+ services to Pro it's very disheartening to see the decline in functionality.
@tigerwoulds This looks like a great tool. I would love to share your script with folks at my organization. We are often starting and stopping services, and have hundreds of them. This would be great to use in lieu of Server Manger.
I'll also chime in that not having this capability in Pro is BAD! Please reconsider.

Our organization is still in the transition phase towards full adoption of ArcGIS Pro as a replacement of ArcMap/ArcCatalog. Part of that transition mean we must update our procedure docs for administration tasks using ArcGIS Pro, but I just realized the functionality to manage map services is completely missing. At first I thought maybe I needed to find what I needed in a contextual tab as opposed to a right click context menu, but when I couldn't find it an internet search led me here, to my dismay and disappointment.
In my opinion this is ABSOLUTELY a necessary improvement needed for ArcGIS Pro. This is one of those major road blocks that will force people back to using ArcGIS Catalog. If Esri really wants people to transition to ArcGIS Pro they ABSOLUTELY NEED to make sure the software does what ArcCatalog can already do, not just add new bells and whistles that only 1% of user will ever touch.
I am tasked with leading the transition to ArcGIS Pro at my organization and shortcomings in the software like this only make my job more difficult and the full adoption slower. I don't think that using ArcGIS Server Manager is a viable work around as this would take addition time as others have noted and we don't want everyone who might need to restart or stop/stop a map service using this management tool.
Voting up all three of these ideas and inviting my coworkers/collogues to do the same.
Just want to add my voice to the chorus that not being able to start/stop services in Pro is highly desirable. My latest workflow where that would be handy: I need to make a minor modification to a feature class that is in a dataset with several other feature classes. I have 6 services that I need to stop so that the dataset is unlocked. They are in different folders and on different pages in Server Manager. Instead of just selecting them all and stopping them, I have to find and stop them one at a time in Server Manager. Then, once the change is made, I have to hunt them down and restart them. The downtime for my web services is longer with Server Manager than it would be in Pro.
I get the sense that Esri has a philosophical difference of opinion on this and really wants everyone to go through Server Manager. If that's the case, then they need to enhance Server Manager so that you can find, stop, and start multiple services at the same time. Maybe even build in a Server Manager pane that you can open in Pro? It would be better to have it all in one place than to have to go to two different applications to accomplish a simple task.
Could those of you attending the ESRI UC in a few weeks find the ArcGIS Server island (or whatever it's called) and advocate for these enhancements. I'm not going but for those who go this is a chance to talk to the top ESRI people and possibly light a fire under them.

Good idea, thank you. I wouldn't call these just enhancements, they are missing core functionality that makes Pro an 'Amateur' compared to the functionality I use in ArcCatalog. All the above mentioned tools plus things like targeting areas for caching and changing service settings/functionality, it's all so convenient and slick in Catalog, it's going to be a nightmare to use Manager instead - I'm hanging on to Desktop for as long as I can until ESRI address it.
Guess what, during the break in plenary session this afternoon, they are saying ArcGIS Pro won't have support to administrating ArcGIS Server services. Totally bummed. They are talking possibly Portal. Well then, in my opinion, it would be better to merge ArcGIS Server Manager in the Portal experience for the role of ArcGIS Enterprise Administrator. Also, we need to be able to be able to select on multiple services to turn on and off all at once. Merging the engine of arcgis server with portal would be great since we are looking at microservices anyways creating a better upgrade and install experience. Also, helps performance scaling.
Yea, I heard that too, it is a bummer. I'll 2nd your idea @SavageTrimble but my only concern is that not everyone will have Portal. So there needs to be a non-Portal solution or tool as well.
@MatthewStull1 I get it. However, if they merge both in the next release or future releases, it would make sense. I don't think older tech will be developed on since the backend is going to change to microservices.

I have a few stand alone ArcGIS Servers that are not federated with portal, so merging ArcGIS Server Manager with the portal experience will not help me. I echo my colleagues. This functionality needs to be in ArcGIS Pro. Thank you for everything and have a delightful day.

Yeah, I'm bummed about this. I hope they improve functionality in Server Manager. I agree that I'm not sure how incorporating it into Portal will help with stand-alone Server installs. All of our public services are stand-alone. We only use Enterprise/Portal internally.
I think ArcGIS Enterprise will change in the future. I've referenced Microservices and I think the technology will change to scale differently than what you have currently. That doesn't help you today but technology changes and the architecture you have currently will rapidly change. There are threshold issues with ArcGIS Server requiring multiple instances but in the future this most likely will change. We shall see how microservices evolves in the esri technologies. All I'm saying that there are trends and don't be surprised by a radical change in how we deploy enterprise which I believe will help future upgrades and deployments of enterprise.

Exchanging ideas, making a better world together by expanding our minds and removing the barriers that inhibit creativity. Like Jack Dangermond said a year or so ago, 'Our minds limit the possibilities'. I think I paraphrased but the point is we expand our mind, think outside of the box and incorporate a collection of ideas.
