Using ArcGIS 10 for Marine Mammals Sightings and Strandings Monitoring in Cameroon Coastal Areas
Presenter(s): Aristide Takoukam Kamla, African Marine Mammals Conservation Association, Cameroon
The Atlantic humpback dolphin (Sousa teuszii) and the West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis), both marine mammals and classified as Vulnerable, have an uncertain status in Cameroon. Existing work indicates that these species are hunted, suffer bycatches and habitat degradation in Cameroon and elsewhere. However data are few and there is insufficient information to determine their status in Cameroon. This project intends to improve available knowledge of these species by building a fisher community network that will record and communicate sightings and captures and by completing boat surveys in sites with high sighting reports. Data collected will then enable the creation of a distribution and density map using ArcGIS 10 software and improve
