Did you know that there is a rich source of map layers available online? That in it you can search and add layers to the map and thus solve problems you couldn't handle before?

<\/P>

Imagine volunteers planning an educational trail. They surveyed its route in the field and display it on the map. They attach the cadastral layer and find out the owners of parcels for which permission is required.<\/P>

<\/P>

Or a real estate agency that displays a parcel on the map in the cadastral layer, adds a technical map with engineering networks or a layer of year-round precipitation, and thus presents the land to clients directly on site. In the office, they can display the land in 3D with a view preview of the surroundings.<\/P>

<\/P>

The source we are talking about is the so-called Living Atlas from Esri, which is available online in the ArcGIS mapping platform. It is the most significant collection of geographic information from around the world. It contains applications, maps, and especially data layers that affect human life and nature, such as weather, transportation, demographics, water bodies, urban systems, 3D relief and imagery, but also geological maps, environmental burdens, or wind direction and strength. The Living Atlas strengthens the broad and important work of the GIS community in addressing global and regional challenges. The Living Atlas is constantly evolving.<\/P>

<\/P>

Contribute too<\/STRONG><\/H2><\/P>Every spatial resource in the Living Atlas increases its value and expands areas of use. It is important that owners of interesting data sources provide their data to the Living Atlas and allow the GIS community to access content from a central place. Inclusion in the Living Atlas means that data will not only be easy to search but mainly to use?<\/STRONG><\/P><\/P>Who can contribute?<\/H3><\/P>Organizations of public administration that provide GIS data to the public can contribute, as well as all other entities that own spatial data and want to provide it for free use.<\/P><\/P>Does providing data affect ownership and copyright rights?<\/H3><\/P>If your content is intended for the public, making it available through the Living Atlas does not affect ownership and copyright rights. Data remain in their original storage. License information and usage methods can be directly stated in the content description.<\/P><\/P>How to get your content into the Living Atlas of the world<\/H3><\/P>Adding your content to the Living Atlas of the world<\/EM> consists of several steps. If your content is already published to the public via ArcGIS Online, only a few clicks separate you from making it available in the Atlas.<\/P><\/P>If your organization shares its outputs with the public through map services, it will be necessary to consider whether existing services will be used or if it will be more appropriate to create new services.<\/P><\/P>Due to the diversity of infrastructure used in organizations, procedures may vary. Therefore, this article summarizes recommendations for the most common procedures.<\/P><\/P>Basic procedure<\/H3><\/P>Creating content and adding content to ArcGIS Online<\/EM>Logging into livingatlas.arcgis.com<\/EM>, meeting scored criteria, and nominating content for the Living Atlas<\/LI><\/OL><\/P>The first point is complex; therefore, below we provide several examples. Its implementation is mostly ensured by a GIS specialist and in some cases also requires a system administrator.<\/P><\/P>The second point does not require technical skills. It mainly involves filling out descriptions clearly so that content can be easily searched. An essential part is stating conditions for legal use of data. This point is performed by a person who knows data well and their purpose.<\/P><\/P>Adding content to <\/STRONG>ArcGIS Online<\/STRONG><\/EM><\/P>As soon as you start considering nominating content, you need to think about what data source you will use. Several factors may influence this decision, e.g., whether you have hardware resources available for hosting services or how often source data will change. Below we list some scenarios that may occur in your organization.<\/P><\/P>Example 1. We have ArcGIS Enterprise and have created an organization in ArcGIS Online <\/A>

Example 2. We have ArcGIS Enterprise accessible from the internet; ArcGIS Online is not yet set up.<\/A>

10.Select type ArcGIS Server web service, enter copied URL.

You will need to create an ArcGIS Online account for your organization. The whole process takes no more than 15 minutes.

1. Prepare your login credentials for the named user, which you received when obtaining the license.<\/P><\/P>2. Log in at www.arcgis.com<\/A><\/P>

3. Use the wizard to create your organization. Focus mainly on filling in the correct descriptive information about your company. Concentrate especially on the following tabs:<\/P>

General tab<\/EM><\/P><\/P>Organization Logo and Name<\/EM> - set your logo and name<\/LI>Organization Verification<\/EM> - after completing the setup, send a verification request to Esri.<\/LI>Organization Description<\/EM> - fill in the description of your company<\/LI>Organization Summary<\/EM> - fill in a brief
description of your company<\/LI><\/UL><\/P>Security tab<\/EM><\/P><\/P>We recommend checking all options in the first two items.<\/LI><\/LI><\/UL><\/P><\/P><\/P>4. Fill in the profile description of your user and set it up<\/P><\/P><\/P><\/P>5. Continue as in

Example 3.<\/STRONG> We have ArcGIS Online, we do not have ArcGIS Enterprise<\/EM><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/P>ArcGIS Server is not a requirement to add content to the Living Atlas. To make your data available anytime, it needs to be hosted in the cloud or other servers. A professional option is hosting directly in ArcGIS Online. You only need to perform a one-time data upload, and everything else is secured. You can publish data as individual layers or map compositions of layers.<\/P><\/P>Note<\/EM>: Hosting your data on ArcGIS Online consumes your credits. However, this is a relatively small amount of credits (see the table

1. Log in to ArcGIS Online<\/P>

<\/P>

2. In the Content <\EM> tab, click the Create<\EM> button<\P>\\\<\p>\\<\p>\3. Select the desired feature class type Feature Layer<\EM> (points, lines, polygons) or Tile Layer <\STRONG>(raster data)<\p>\4. Choose the nature of data (e.g., points) and press the Create<\EM> button<\p>\\\<\p>\5. Fill in layer details mainly:<\p>\\ Title <\em>- layer name\ Tags <\em>- use existing tags or create new ones\ Summary <\em>- fill in a description of your company

6. After creating the layer, click the Open in Map Viewer

7. In the new feature class, click the Add button

8. Search for a file with data. Select the option Keep original features). Click on the button Import Layer

9. Click on the button Save.

10. Click on HOME > Content and find the populated layer.

11. Click on the layer name to display its settings.

12. In the tab Overview you can change basic information about the layer.

13. In the tab Settings adjust settings. Recommendations are highlighted in the image below.

Nominating content for Living Atlas

If you already have content added in ArcGIS Online, you can now nominate it among selected content in the Living Atlas of the world. The actual selection, i.e., decision whether your nominated content will be added to the atlas, is made by Esri. Our company performs nomination selection for Slovak Republic.

Before nominating itself, it is necessary to describe content appropriately so that it is uniquely identifiable and easy to search for. The scoring system and individual suggestions can help guide you towards improvements. To activate the nomination button, it is necessary to score 80 out of 100 points. We recommend achieving all 100 points.

1. Log in at livingatlas.arcgis.com

2. Click on tab My Contributions, and open your layer.



3. Review improvement suggestions and monitor point count.



4. Make improvement suggestions until you meet required points (we recommend scoring 100/100 points)

5. After scoring min. 80 points, the button Nominate now.  activates.



6. In popup window click on OK



7. Congratulations. You have successfully nominated your content into Living Atlas.



The nominated content will be reviewed by ArcGEO staff within next hours. Subsequently, your content will be added into Atlas.
