The base map

Our previous blog already contained an announcement, but now it is really here: the OpenStreetMap base map. From now on it is possible to use this vector tiled base map within various applications in the ArcGIS platform, such as ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Pro, but for example also in Collector for ArcGIS. This base map that we make available is our first map product based on OpenStreetMap (OSM). This blog is the first in a series of three in which we launch various new map products. In this blog I tell a bit more about how the base map is constructed and what you can do with it.

A base map across the border
OpenStreetMap is frequently used as a background map in all kinds of apps. That is why we wanted to make this map available to our users. The unique thing about this base map is that this map, unlike our other base maps which only use the Dutch basic registrations, also includes Belgium and Luxembourg and a part of Denmark, Germany and France and the United Kingdom. This fulfills a request from many users who also work around or across the border. The background map is available in the RD coordinate system (WKID: 28992). This does mean that the display in the Netherlands is the most accurate.

Development and styling
To create this map we started working in ArcGIS Pro. Various techniques have been applied in the map to display the map as well as possible at different scale levels. For example, different land use features have a different color at a different scale level. Industry is shown purple, but zoomed out grey, so that the map does not become too busy. Similarly, roads consist of two lines when zoomed in deeply and one line when zoomed out further.

Map layers
The OpenStreetMap base map has been made available as a vector tiled base map. This offers many possibilities. For example, part of the map can be downloaded on mobile devices for fieldwork. The styling is optimized so that it fits well with the scale levels established by Geonovum. The base map is visible from scales 1:6,144,000 up to 1:1,46. You can zoom in to approximately the actual size of the objects. These also remain sharp down to the deepest level because they are vectors.
</></></>The main advantage of a vector base map is that you can style the map according to your own wishes. We have made a classification for this that makes searching for specific parts of the map easier. The classification is comparable to our Topo RD base map. OSM contains a large amount of useful places, such as shops, which can be turned on or off depending on the purpose of the map.</></></></></></></></></></></></></></></></></></></> < P c l a s s = " " > < I M G __ j i v e _ i d = " 4 7 5 8 1 5 " a l t = " " c l a s s = " i m a g e - 1 j i v e - i m a g e " h e i g h t = " 3 1 9 " s r c = " h t t p s : / / u s . v - c d n . n e t / 6 0 3 8 8 5 1 / u p l o a d s / l e g a c y f s / o n l i n e / 4 7 5 8 1 5 _ G r o e p s l a g e n . p n g " w i d t h = " 2 7 3 " / > < / P > < P c l a s s = " " > < / P > < P c l a s s = " " > < S T R O N G > < S P A N l a n g = " N L " > F e e d b a c k < / S P A N > < / S T R O N G > < / P > < P c l a s s = " " > < S P A N l a n g = " N L " > T h e b a s e m a p i s c u r r e n t l y s t i l l i n b e t a .
