This month Esri Netherlands presents a new nationwide dataset: 3D-Trees (beta).<\/A><\/P>3D-Trees (beta) has been made available in the Content offering of Esri Netherlands and can now be added to scenes in ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro.<\/P><\/P>This blog is written by Marleen Mulder<\/A>, presales engineer at Esri Netherlands.<\/EM><\/P> <\/P>What is the 3D-Trees dataset intended for?<\/STRONG><\/P>The 3D-Trees dataset is an approximation of reality. The majority of the dataset is generated and therefore does not correspond to the exact location of trees in the Netherlands. The dataset is intended to quickly create a more complete 3D representation in ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online. It is now possible to quickly add 3D trees to the environment alongside buildings and a terrain model for a better approximation of reality, with just a few clicks. <\/P> <\/P>What information does the dataset contain?<\/STRONG><\/P>The dataset consists of nearly 30 million 2D points to which a 3D symbol has been assigned. <\/SPAN><\/P> <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/P>The following information has been added to the point data:<\/P>Tree species (Deciduous forest, Coniferous forest, Mixed forest or Green space forest plantation). Based on BGT: Vegetated Terrain Part.<\/LI>Tree height (in meters). These values are random and vary between 6 and 14 meters.<\/LI>Position (in hundredths). These values are random and vary between 0.01 and 0.99.<\/LI>Symbol type (Genus). Used for the Thematic Preset Symbology<\/A>.<\/LI><\/UL> <\/P>How was the dataset created?<\/STRONG><\/P>The 3D-Trees dataset was generated based on data from the Basic Registration Large-scale Topography (BGT)<\/A>. Where available, the BGT: Vegetation Object Point was used. This point layer contains official locations of trees maintained by some municipalities in the Netherlands. Because this is a plus object and not mandatory to record in the BGT, we supplemented the dataset with generated data. For this, a second layer from the BGT was used: Vegetated Terrain Part. With the Create Random Points Tool<\/A>, random points were placed on these areas. Together they form the nearly 30 million count 3D-Trees dataset that can be used for all of the Netherlands.<\/P> <\/P>Tips for use<\/STRONG><\/P>A thematic symbology has been chosen. Naturally, the symbology can be changed to a realistic tree symbol.
