Many governments and organizations today face the challenge of addressing the climate issue. Several provinces and knowledge institutions developed a few years ago the need to bring together national climate information in an accessible way. From this need, the Klimaateffectatlas<\/A><\/SPAN> was created in 2007. The Klimaateffectatlas <\/SPAN>provides a first impression of the future threats of flooding, water nuisance, drought, and heat as a result of climate change. Various knowledge institutions and consultancy firms are involved in the development of the Klimaateffectatlas. Stichting <\/SPAN><\/SPAN>Climate Adaptation Services<\/A><\/SPAN> <\/SPAN>(CAS) has coordinated and managed the Klimaateffectatlas since 2012. The climate information is already easily accessible via the Klimaateffectatlas website, but there was also a desire to combine this data more easily with other data in geographic information systems.<\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/P><\/P>From this desire, a nice collaboration started last year between Arjen Koekoek<\/A><\/SPAN> from Climate Adaptation Services (CAS) and Esri Netherlands. CAS provides the data and we convert it into a form in which the map layers can be quickly visualized within ArcGIS. Since March 2018, we have been offering the map layers from the Klimaateffectatlas as content.<\/SPAN> Over Morgen<\/A> makes frequent use of this. Over Morgen is a consultancy firm working on a future-proof living environment. They already used the map layers from the Klimaateffectatlas and occasionally made data requests to use them. The desire to combine the layers with other geographic data grew stronger, and at that moment, the map layers became available as ArcGIS Content.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/P>Today, the Klimaateffectatlas has been updated with a large number of new layers, especially for the themes "Flooding" and "Drought." A good moment to tell you more about what you can do with the Klimaateffectatlas. In our magazine<\/A>, you can read more about the Klimaateffectatlas and how to use the map layers within ArcGIS. In this interview, Robin Ammerlaan<\/A> from Over Morgen explains how they apply the map layers from the Klimaateffectatlas.<\/P><\/P><\/P> <\/P>Robin, could you tell us something about the projects where you use content from the Klimaateffectatlas and exactly what you use this content for?<\/STRONG><\/P><\/STRONG>"To make areas future-proof, insight into the climate adaptation task is essential. Whether we are asked for advice on inner-city transformations, an approach for future-proof residential neighborhoods, regional area programs, or real estate redevelopment: the area is always central to us. We use data to gain insight into an area and its challenges in advance.<\/P>For example, in Maassluis, together with the municipality and various stakeholders, we set up the program plan 'Next Generation Residential Neighborhoods Maassluis.' The program plan serves as a guideline to make all neighborhoods of Maassluis sustainable, attractive, and future-proof by 2040. Climate adaptation forms an important pillar in the plan. We made extensive use of data to visualize the current situation and to identify problematic spots together with residents and stakeholders. Some neighborhoods in Maassluis lie significantly lower than others. Expected water nuisance on the map was recognized, and quick explanations were given about which streets this was really a nuisance for. A recent heavy rain shower was still fresh in memory so everyone knew exactly what it was about. We also noticed that a parking lot where trees used to stand became very hot in summer. By involving stakeholders from different backgrounds, not only does a sense of urgency arise regarding climate adaptation, but new ways to deal with it also come to light. We delivered the program plan itself in the form of a Story Map<\/A>. <\/SPAN>This way, participants get access to interactive maps where they can view and query data while reading the plan.<\/P><\/P><\/P><\/P><\/P>For the municipality of Soest, we conducted an exploration of various challenges playing out in the t’ Hart neighborhood. In line with the Environment Act (Omgevingswet), we sat down with housing corporation Portaal, water board Vallei en Veluwe, and the municipality of Soest to work on a roadmap for the neighborhood. One of the challenges was water nuisance. The expected water nuisance on streets was already well mapped by the municipality, and there was already a plan for it. However, the water nuisance maps from the Klimaateffectatlas provided valuable additions here and there. For example, nuisance was regularly experienced on paved back alleys between houses. These places did not appear on municipal maps but did show up on the Klimaateffectatlas."<\/P>What is the advantage now that the map layers are in ArcGIS Online?<\/STRONG><\/P>"We can now use the map layers very quickly and efficiently. For example, adding map layers within web apps and StoryMaps is now very easy. All styling and pop-ups are well configured, and we see that the content team keeps it up-to-date and continuously makes improvements. Also, using them for analyses in ArcGIS Pro is much easier now that map layers can be found in the portal."<\/P><\/P><\/STRONG><\/P><\/P>Which themes and map layers are especially important for you?<\/STRONG><\/P>"For analyses and area explorations, actually all of them are important. Because all four themes (heat, drought, water nuisance, and flooding) are well filled with various maps, you get control over the situation. In combination with substantive knowledge and additional maps, you can read the landscape and see underlying connections. This also makes it easier to tell a clear story.<\/P>

Within participation processes we notice that map layers Water depth during short intense rainfall<\/> and Urban heat island effect<\/> are most evocative. Residents can compare this information with their own experience. We see that bottlenecks are often recognizable for residents."
