Help with Error: Failed to update one of the domains.

Full message is:

Failed to update one of the domains.
The existing domain field type does not match that of the updated domain.

This is in ArcCatalog 10.6.1 while trying to add new coded domain for a geodatabase. It doesn't seem to want to keep the new domain as a text field type.
