Create renderer based on related table?

Question

I need to create something akin to the create renderer sample, but have several years of data.  Is it possible to set up a renderer that is based on a related table?  On the back end, I would have a feature class with related tables for each years worth of data.  I'd like to create a dropdown to select the year that would identify which related table to use, then select the demographic topic of interest and create the renderer.  I know related tables can be queried, but can the renderer use them?

I also have a similar issue. I'm trying to create a renderer based on whether a feature has a related record or not, or how many it has.
