Should I split my service lines at the valve?

I have created a geometric network for a water system. While I do split all my mains at the valve (even though I get those tiny segments at tees), do I need to split my lateral lines at the valve too? I'm using the Local Government model, so all my laterals (hydrant, fire, commercial, etc.) are in the same feature class.

If you are maintaining your lateral as complex edges within a geometric network, then you would not want to split them at the valve.  The sample data from the Local Govt model has the lateral lines as complex edges.
