Converting lat long to state plane

Question

I need to convert a table of lat long points to state plane. I have tried to use a dbf but the calculate geometry tool is always grayed out. Even when I am in an editing session. I also have tried using a shapefile but when I calculate the geometry the values generated  x,y state plane fields are the same as the lat long fields. HELP! PLEASE!

Your shapefile is obviously in decimal degrees.  "Project" it to your state plane (data management tools, projections and transformations, Project), and calculate geometry in the file.
