When I start ArcPad 10 and try to open a map I get this message:
"A problem has occurred with gwes.exe"

And then ArcPad closes. How do I fix this problem?

It's going to be tough to narrow this one down. Here's my best suggestion.

1. Perform another factory reset.
2. Upgrade the Operating System of the GeoXH 2005 to v5.1.16.
3. Upgrade the GPS firmware to v1.82
4. Download and install ArcPad 10.0.3 (10 R3) from your Customer Care site.

This is a low memory related warning. Your map probably contains too many (or too large) feature classes in the map. You'll need to limit the number of feature classes (among other possibilities) so that your map will open. There is the possibility that it's one or two feature classes that are the main instigators, you can use the process of elimination to determine this.

I am unsure how I fixed it, but there is no longer a problem with the gwes.exe file. Now though I am getting messages about problems with repllog.exe and device.exe, and Microsoft ActiveSync has a synchronization error. Any ideas about what's going on?

Now that I'm thinking about it, I do remember an issue I've seen from time to time with that GeoExplorer 2005 series device. A year or so ago I talked with someone that was having a similar gwes.exe / device.exe issue with their 2005 series using ArcPad 7.1.1. I was not able to reproduce the issue on my 2005 series device, until I updated to the latest firmware. After updating the device firmware, I started to receive those errors, but only when browsing for files through Add Data.

A bug was logged for 7.1.1 related to this issue. A few weeks back, I got wind of the same issue happening in ArcPad 10 on the GeoXH 2005 series. This may be random, but that issue may have been related to Trimble's TrimPix.

Are you:

1. Using TrimPix?
2. Browsing for files when the error occurs?

If you're not browsing for files, at what point are you receiving these errors?

I get the errors when I dock the Trimble, and it attempts to sync. ActiveSync tells me there is a problem and then the repllog.exe and/or the device.exe problem pops up on the Trimble.

Was ActiveSync installed on the desktop BEFORE ArcPad was installed?

I have been working with this Trimble since last October, and there have been very few problems, until the last couple weeks.

Are you using ArcPad 10 SP3 (10.0.3)?

Normally I would recommend a factory reset, but didn't you just complete one of those earlier this week?

I have ArcPad 10.0 R2 (Build 30)

I did do a factory reset. It was working fine for a couple days, and I don't think anything out of the ordinary was done to or with it.

When it went to validate the update it was unable to do so.

It says that this upgrade doesn't support the GeoExplorer that I am using.

Which OS version do you currently have?

The Release Notes mention that you must be at v5.1.15 before you can upgrade to v5.16. Perhaps you're more than one version back and need to step your way up?

I searched around for what OS I am currently running and in Settings>System>About it says OS 5.1.70 (Build 14402.1.1.0), but in Settings>System>System Info it says OS Revision 5.1.16. Does that mean that it was successfully upgraded?

An OS Revision of 5.1.16 means that you were already at the current release.

I take it you did a second factory reset since you got to the steps of upgrading your unit's OS? If so, go ahead and download / install 10.0.3. Any change in behavior with the new version?

I downloaded and installed 10.0.3, and I am no longer getting the error messages.

An old problem has come back I'm afraid. When I go to Add Layer(s) for a map it takes quite literally 6 minutes to search, and then none of the aerial photos that I have saved in the Trimble come up. I go to Advanced Settings>Extensions and there are no problems there. The aerial photos are saved as jpeg2000, and that extension is there and checked.

That's strange.

Rename your My ArcPad folder, startup ArcPad, and re-check the JPEG2000 extension in the Advanced Settings.

...\My Documents\My ArcPad

Rename My ArcPad to My ArcPadOLD, or something like that. When you start ArcPad back up it will generate a new folder.
