StoryMaps layers are inaccessible

StoryMaps layers are inaccessible when I review the maps with MyStories (hosted on Portal 10.4.1). The storymaps were working fine a few months back, and now they do not work. When I test the StoryMaps, they occasionally say "accessible" for a little bit and then revert to "inaccessible". ESRI-SouthAfrica has spent two full afternoons sitting at my desk and trying to identify the problem and they cannot. Every is accessed via Https, we have tried using the web adaptor and the direct server address, EI, Chrome and Firefox give the same error. I have tried all sorts of different sharing setting combinations. I am stumped and extremely frustrated and would really appreciate some advice!

Hi Sebastien,

If you access your story over HTTPS, the checkbox you are referring to will be checked but disabled (you can't uncheck it). That's because you can't access embedded content over HTTP in a story that's loaded over HTTPS.

If you access your story over HTTP, that checkbox will be checked and enabled so that you can uncheck it to try to load your content over HTTP. Unchecking that box is useful in cases where the web page you're embedding does not support HTTPS and your organization's administrative settings don't require that all content be loaded over HTTPS.

It's a best practice to always have a valid certificate on a GIS server, so that your services support HTTPS, and it's recommended to always use the HTTPS URL when adding services to web maps.

You can try to access your story over HTTP, if permitted by your organization's administrative settings and the services should load.

Hi Miranda,

Sorry you are having an issue with your story maps. What is the specific error reported by My Stories? Are the layers that are giving you trouble coming from ArcGIS Online or an ArcGIS Server? If a server, is the server in your organization or located somewhere else?

Is your portal publicly accessible? If so, could you send me a link to your story? (you can post here or send me a private GeoNet message).

Hi Owen,

Unfortunately the Portal isn't publically accessible. Everything is stored on the server, which is Federated with the Portal. We have tried breaking the federation and refederating too, and that didn't help. I have taken some screenshots, taken within minutes of each other, where sometimes there are errors and then none, and then they all have errors.

Thanks for the additional information and screenshots, Miranda. A few more questions:

Is this the only story where you are having this issue, or is it all of your stories on this portal?
Could you load My Stories with the Chrome developer tools panel open to the Console tab and capture some screenshots like you did (before and after the issue) with the dev tools open?

Hello,

I have the same problem. I noticed that the https option is always available without possibility to disable when I selected a map.

The last week, it worked and we can selected the https option or not.

As my webmap services are not https, now it can't be display.
