Difficuilty Opening .mxd file in ArcMap 10.1

Question

I have a .mxd file that I coppied over from a server to my computer, and when I open up the file it freezes when I both double click the shortcut as well as when I manually locate the file and open it in ArcMap. I tried using MXDDoctor to see if there were any issues with the file, and it does the same thing the ArcMap does. I am running version 10.1 on my machine. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to resolve this issue. Thanks.

I have the same problem with version 10.2.1.  All file are on the local machine.  A few file may open as I have been having this issue for a week now and save my files every few step. MXDDoctor also locks up..

I have not found anywhere were anyone has overcome this problem

This could be a possibilit, although I did try opening it from where it is located on the server and still the same issues with both ArcMap and MXDDoctor.

By chance, did the project contain data that may reside on a server and the mxd is having difficulty making a connection to it?
