Custom point symbols when using Map Image Layers

Hi!

Is it possible to use custom point symbols in AGOL on a Map Image Layer (Map Service)? When I try to do according to the descritpions in https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-online/mapping/using-images-as-custom-point-symbols/using a Map Image Layer, the symbols does not appear in the map, but when doing the same using a Feature Layer, the symbols does appear in the map. I'm using the same image url for the custom point symbol hosted on AGOL in both cases.
