ArcGIS Explorer Build 1500 - will the bugs in 1200 be resolved??

I have run into two serious bugs in Build 1200. The first is a problem with lines disappearing when I zoom in or out. ESRI's suggestion is to clear the cache. I can hardly expect a client to do that every time they run the program. The second is that twice now when I changed the configuration it corrupted the application completely. I could no longer use the navigation tool to zoom in and out, but could only use the mouse wheel. The only solution seems to be to uninstall and reinstall the program. I see that Build 1500 is about to be released. Instead of fancy 3D building displays I wish ESRI would simply concentrate on getting rid of any bugs.

I hope they get the issue with 1200 crashing Arc Desktop fixed with this as well. Going through the work around of installing, uninstalling and reinstalling all ESRI products is bad. I was finally able to repair Desktop and reinstall 900. 1200 should not have been released in my opinion. Hope 1500 has these issues resolved.

I too have experienced crashes of ArcGIS Desktop on my machine and they seem to occur after ArcGIS Explorer crashes. The symptom in Desktop is that the symbol window is blank with no palette and no choices of line types. I had to reinstall Desktop after uninstalling Explorer. We will not be using Explorer in our office until we are assured of a stable release.

Tell me more about the disappearing line problem.
Which view are you in �?? 2D or 3D?
What kind of line is it? (Note, KML, ArcGIS layer, GeoDatabase, Shapefile, does it have Z values, etc�?�)

When you install ArcGIS Explorer on a machine where ArcGIS Desktop is already installed, It is important to let the installation complete without interruption. It can take upwards of 30 minutes to uninstall 900 and install 1200 (The precise amount of time depends on computer speed). While it may appear that the installation process is uninstalling ArcGIS Desktop it is really scanning the system, if an installation repair is necessary, everything can be put back the way it was prior to the installation. The ArcGIS Explorer setup is designed to be installed with ArcGIS Desktop. The software does not share installation files, each software installation is independent. However, both products do make use of ArcObjects infrastructure and everything needs to be in the proper place in your computer�??s registry.

Once installed, if ArcGIS Desktop starts and ArcGIS Explorer 1200 starts, you do not have a problem with the installation. There are no software dependencies between ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Explorer. Indirectly, if a bug in either software product is using up computer memory, it can affect all applications that you are running on your computer.

There is a known installation conflict with ArcGIS 9.3.1 and Image Server �?? a patch for ArcGIS 9.3.1 is available http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPatch&PID=43&MetaID=1563 or you can install ArcGIS 9.3.1 service pack 1.

If the install completes successfully and ArcGIS Desktop software no longer starts, You can try running a repair on ArcGIS Desktop (Windows Control panel �?? un-install program) If the repair fails to resolve the issue, you will need to enter a support call. Be prepared to provide information about all ArcGIS related products and custom extensions that you may have installed on your computer.

After installing ArcGIS Explorer , if ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap, ArcGlobe, ArcReader, etc..) start up, but ArcGIS Explorer fails to start, it is likely not an installation issue.

It could be a graphics card issue. You can use this site to find out specific information about your graphics card http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/1186/10895 and the graphics card requirements for ArcGIS Explorer. Graphics card performance is the number one cause of an ArcGIS Explorer crash on start. It is not the only cause but it is the most prevalent. In many cases updating the graphics card driver will resolve the issue.

Read through some of the other posts, several by me, and you will notice several users having issues with build 1200 and Desktop 9.3 on the same machine. I have Desktop on the enterprise system with a license server in our agency for desktop. I let it run through the full install of 1200 and removal of 900. When I opened 1200 it worked fine, but desktop crashed when I tried to open it. I ran a repair on desktop, and that solved the problem of desktop opening, but then 1200 crashed. I don't have any other configuration of desktop set up as it says in the install instructions for 1200 (ArcServer, etc).

I tried to reinstall 900 once, it failed. Removed the ArcGIS Explorer folder in program files and reinstalled 900, and it works fine again. (Both Desktop and 900). So, I am certain there is a bug in 1200 wether or not there are dependencies. It modifies something in the registry that makes both products incompatible. I do hope build 1500 will be more stable and not have these issues. Our agency will not allow us to upgrade to 1200. I did like some of the features I got to play with (multiple coordinate systems use in search (DDM, UTM, etc). Please make sure 1500 is stable and compatible before release!!

I too have lines that disappear in build 900 and had the same behavior in 1200. The lines are simple lines created from the toolbar. For me, not all the line disappears but chunks of it. There appears to be no relationship to the topography and the pieces that disappear.

Our agency will not allow us to upgrade to 1200.

What about upgrading to 9.3.1 sp1 or ArcGIS 10 when it is released?

They will not upgrade us yet, but probablly will later, but still think there is a bug with build 1200 and 9.3 that should be looked at.

I can only hope they fix this priece of software up as well! Considering it is supposed to be something that you could potentially put on everyones desktop in an organisation not a good marketing tool for ESRI!

It takes almost 2 minutes to start up. Not exactly a light weight client
The globe animation is jerky when you zoom
It installed with no extra basemaps and It crashes when I try and manually load basemaps.

It is a shame as it has a lot of potential.

I tried to attach a .ncfg file to this post but got an invalid file type error. I was running ArcGIS Explorer in 2D. The errors as I recall were with different types of files - layer files and layer packages. Build 1200 is currently corrupted once again. The navigator is frozen. I can only zoom in and out using the mouse wheel. I did run the compatibility program and my system passed with no problem. We have IT administrators who install and uninstall software and they contend they did all the installs and uninstalls as you recommended. I've concluded the problems with ArcInfo are possibly unrelated.

JohnPower - Sorry to jump into this conversation so late but when you experience weird behavior like the above described did you try resetting your user profile before doing a complete reinstall?

I've seen the empty palette behavior (9.3.1 SP1, ArcGIS Explorer Build 500 - haven't figured out what causes it) and it clears up when I delete normal.mxt or (more drastically) kill my whole user profile - its a pain to rebuild customizations saved in ArcMap but way less hassle than a reinstall! For those who don't know, your profile is in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ESRI. To reset the whole thing, rename ESRI to ESRIOld and the directory will be regenerated the first time you start ArcMap or ArcCatalog. Templates are stored in \ESRI\ArcMap\Templates\ as normal.mxt and in \ESRI\ArcCatalog\ as normal.gxt. They, too, are regenerated at when the application is first initiated. You can kill ESRIOld and old templates once you're satisfied the change fixed your problem.
