what is the best way to share a file geodatabase?

I am trying to share a file geo database via an ftp site. Does the geo database have to be converted to another file format?

zip it... nothing will happen and everything handles zip with no problems, sometimes flakey/unknown file extensions cause security issues (eg *.gdb)
