Spatial join two features that share a common attribute...

Hello. I am trying to determine the way to only spatial join two features that share a common attribute...i.e I have a have a point layer 1 with 30 different dates. I would like to only join the the closest target feature B that matches the date field.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

perhaps a select by attribute first to get the common attribute, then a spatial join.  

Selections are honored in geoprocessing tools (for the most part), so that would just limit your dual requirements to one.
