Introduction
Esri providesArcGIS Enterprise software patches for ArcGIS products, including ArcGIS Enterprise. These patches address security vulnerabilities, fix known bugs, and improve product stability and reliability. To continue using ArcGIS with confidence, it is important to apply the appropriate patches at the right time for each environment.
This blog provides an overview of patches for ArcGIS Enterprise, along with instructions for applying them and important considerations.
Patches for ArcGIS Enterprise
Various patches are released for ArcGIS Enterprise even after a product has been released. Applying patches can resolve known issues and improve system security and stability.
This article groups the main patches available for ArcGIS Enterprise into the following three types, based on their purpose and what they apply to. Since each type has a different purpose and scope, we’ll take a closer look at them below.
Security patches are updates that fix security vulnerabilities discovered after a product is released. They are primarily provided for Portal for ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server and may include not only vulnerability fixes but also fixes for security-related bugs and some known issues. Leaving security vulnerabilities unaddressed can lead to risks such as unauthorized access, privilege escalation, and information leaks. For this reason, applying security patches is essential to operating ArcGIS Enterprise securely. In general, these patches are released simultaneously for multiple versions. It is therefore recommended that you check for the latest security patch for your ArcGIS Enterprise version and apply it promptly.
When applying patches, please also refer to “ArcGIS Trust Center | Documentation.” The ArcGIS Trust Center provides information on security, privacy, and compliance. In addition, the monthly ArcGIS Security Bulletin may include information about security patches and details of identified vulnerabilities, so we recommend reviewing it. For the latest information (as of October 2026), see “October 2026 ArcGIS Security Bulletin.”
(Examples)
- Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 4 Patch
- ArcGIS Server Security 2026 Update 2 Patch
- Bug-fix patches (excluding security-related bugs)
Bug-fix patches are updates that fix known bugs and quality issues discovered after a product is released. They are provided for individual components such as Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Data Store to resolve specific issues and improve stability and performance.
While security patches are often released simultaneously for multiple supported versions, these patches are generally released for specific versions. Therefore, if a patch is available for a component or version you use, we recommend reviewing its details and considering whether to apply it. These patches are often recommended for all users of the affected components, regardless of specific usage conditions.
(Examples)
- ArcGIS Server 12.1 Analysis Tools Patch
- Portal for ArcGIS 11.3 Map Viewer HTTP/2 Patch
- ArcGIS Server Branch Versioning Licensing Patch
- Patches for specific products and server roles
Patches for specific products orserver rolesare updates provided for ArcGIS Apps available with ArcGIS Enterprise and various server roles. Because these patches are limited to specific features and environments, we recommend checking the target version, applicability requirements, and fixes before applying them.
(Examples)
- Portal for ArcGIS 12.0 Enterprise Sites Update 1 Patch
- ArcGIS Server 11.3 Utility Network Patch 3
- ArcGIS GeoEvent Server 11.x Patch 1
Checking patch release status
You can check patch release status using the following methods.
- Esri Technical Support page (ArcGIS Enterprise)
https://support.esri.com/ja-jp/products/arcgis-enterprise
This portal provides technical information and support resources for ArcGIS Enterprise. You can find knowledge base articles, known issues, patch and update information, product lifecycle details, and more.
The Patches and Updates page lets you check the release status of patches for ArcGIS Enterprise. Enter the version number you’re using in the search box to filter the results to patches for that version. You can also search efficiently by setting the filters to “Patches & Updates” and “ArcGIS Enterprise.”
https://support.esrij.com
This support site is provided by Esri Japan. It features technical information, FAQs, patch information, announcements, and a wide range of support resources for ArcGIS products.
When Esri releases a patch, it is first posted on the Esri Technical Support site. Patches for products and features supported domestically are also posted in “Support Site Announcements” as soon as we complete our testing.
Please note that patches for products and features that are not supported domestically will not be posted there.
The patch announcements page provides an overview of each patch and identifies the environments and users for whom it is recommended. Links to the corresponding Esri Technical Support pages are also provided, where you can find details about the patch, application steps, and fixes.
- Check for ArcGIS Enterprise Updates (hereafter, the Patch Notification Tool)
You can check for and install patches using the “Patch Notification Tool,” which is available on servers where ArcGIS Enterprise components are installed.
With this tool, you can check which patches are available for each component, even in a distributed environment, and view a list of patches that have already been applied.
On Windows, launch it from [Start] → [Apps] → [ArcGIS].
Applying patches
Download and apply patches from the individual patch information pages on the Esri Technical Support site or from the Patch Notification Tool. On Windows, run the downloaded MSP file to start the setup. On Linux, extract the downloaded TAR file and run the ./applypatch command to install it.
In either environment, you need write permissions for the ArcGIS installation directory.
There are two things to keep in mind when applying patches.
The same patch may be updated in stages, as with the Portal for ArcGIS Security 2026 Update 1 Patch and Update 2 Patch. Note that patch behavior differs between Windows and Linux in these cases.
Patches provided for Windows are cumulative, so you don’t need to worry about installation order when applying multiple patches. Even if an older patch is applied after a newer one, the newer patch takes precedence, preserving the latest fixes. Also, if you select “Install all available patches” in the Patch Notification Tool, patches are automatically applied in order of release date, starting with the oldest.
On Linux, however, applying an older patch after a newer one may cause the older patch to overwrite the newer patch’s contents. This can undo fixes included in the latest patch, so you must apply patches in order of release date, from oldest to newest. If you use the Patch Notification Tool and select “Install all available patches,” patches are applied in release-date order on Linux as well, avoiding this issue.
- Components temporarily stop while patches are being applied
While a patch is being applied, the affected ArcGIS Enterprise component is temporarily unavailable, so services and some features cannot be accessed.
When applying patches to a production environment in particular, we recommend setting aside sufficient maintenance time in advance to minimize the impact on operations. In distributed environments, patches must be applied to each component, so it is important to confirm the target components, procedures, and application order beforehand.
Service downtime and restart behavior during patch application vary depending on the component, operating system, and patch. Before applying a patch, check the notices about service downtime and restarts on the information page for that patch.
After applying a patch, confirm that the affected ArcGIS Enterprise components have started successfully. Also verify that there are no issues with published services or systems in use.
Checking Applied Patches
There are three main ways to check which patches have been applied.
- Portal for ArcGIS Organization Page
In environments with Portal for ArcGIS installed, starting with ArcGIS Enterprise 12.0, you can check this on the Organization > Information page.
Download PatchFinder, available at the bottom of each patch information page on the Esri Technical Support site, to check which patches have been applied.
You can also use the patch notification tool introduced in “Checking Patch Release Status” to see which patches have been applied.
Conclusion
In this blog post, we covered an overview of patches for ArcGIS Enterprise, how to check patch release status, and the steps for applying patches. Applying patches appropriately helps improve security and stability, allowing you to operate ArcGIS Enterprise with greater confidence.
We hope this article has deepened your understanding of ArcGIS Enterprise patches and will be useful in your day-to-day operations.
