Identical parameters work in geoprocessing tool, but not in a notebook or the python window

I have success when I run the Create TIN geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro using a contour line input (first image). However, if I use the tool's Copy Python Command (second image), and use that code verbatim in an ArcGIS notebook, or in ArcGIS Pro's Python window, the process fails with the message ERROR 050035: No features were added to the TIN. Failed to execute CreateTin (third image).

All values in the Contour field (height field) are valid non-zero, non-NULL values, and 3D licensing is enabled.

Any ideas are welcome. Thank you.

What does the python code look like? How does it compare to the code examples in the help?

The path locations of the source points and the destination tin might not be created properly. Have a look.

I couldn't replicate at all, but would it matter if the input was a layer in your map rather than a data source? I tried both and it worked fine, but that's the only thing I got.

Context is one of the most common causes of this. It's hard to resolve layers from CIM path when you switch contexts. I usually try and target the underlying feature class unless I need a query or selection set from the layer.

Python code from the successful Create TIN geoprocessing tool is shown in the code block below. I copy and paste that code directly into an ArcGIS notebook (bottom image), which fails with the aforementioned error. In both cases, the contour line input is a 2D polyline map layer whose double-type Contour field contains the contour elevation.

As far as I can see, the code matches the HELP code example. And, when I look in tempTin's output path, I see that the TIN has been created, but it is empty…"no features were added" as the error message says. So, it seems like it is objecting to something about the contour line input.

I'll try addressing the contour line input by its path rather than as a map layer when I get in next week.

Contours line featureclass would have to reside in C:\tmp\CalcTankMetrics to be found by CreateTin.

Which is why one of the code samples uses a "workspace" parameter so that the tin output and required inputs are co-located (eg see arcpy.env.workspace = "C:/data" in code sample 1.)

Thanks. Yes, the notebook already sets arcpy.env.workspace to the contour line feature class fGDB. And, the TIN's explicit folder path is to the folder where the fGDB lives.

I'll try setting an explicit path for the contour line feature class when I return.

Thanks to all for their engagement and suggestions. However, I continue to be unable to make either my notebook, or the Python window, create a TIN, even when all inputs, outputs, and parameters are explicitly referenced.

The Create TIN geoprocessing tool, using identical inputs, outputs, and parameters, works just fine. I can't explain it. ;>(

Moving on to Plan B.

Have you tried passing a full path to the Contours dataset instead of relying on a name alone?

Hi Joshua. Yes, the notebook sets arcpy.env.workspace to the project folder, and CreateTin's input and output are explicitly referenced, as illustrated in the code block below.

Also, I cannot get the code to work in the Pro Python window either. But, the exact same input and parameters work just fine in the Create TIN geoprocessing tool. So, I'm stumped. Any ideas will be appreciated.

grasping at straws, but how tin works has a big warning about the spatial reference and how to select it, so perhaps if it was "selected" as per the link, it gets copied over to the script causing the warning in the link. Perhaps specify the spatial reference name only

rather than its full expression, or better still, don't specify one at all, shortening your input to exclude just the tin to create plus, in_features and the constrained_delaunay bits

Since spatial_reference takes a spatial reference, and what you are passing is a string representation of a spatial reference, try creating an arcpy.SpatialReference and passing that into the function. Similarly, in_features take a value table, so try creating an actual value table instead of a string representation of one. It may be the tool is not properly converting string representations of objects when passed as arguments. And the "Copy Python Command" isn't necessarily exactly what the geoprocessing tool ran, it is an equivalent text-based representation that should run.

OK, all great suggestions, but still no success. Here's the summary:

The 2 print statements in lines 4 and 5 of the code block below confirm that the spatial reference object (contourSR) and the value table contents (vTab) are correct, as illustrated in the first image below.

Examining the properties of the empty TIN that is created confirms that the correct spatial reference has been applied to the empty TIN. See the second image below.

But, in the end, the TIN is still empty.
