Convert GIS/SDE Layers to Indoor Dataset

Hi, my organization has a lot of facilities/buildings (all at one site) and we are trying to create indoor datasets for our buildings.

In testing this, I created a new fgdb with a subset of data (using floorplans that exist as polygon layers in sde) and added the FACILITY_ID, LEVEL_ID and ROOM_ID fields to it. I ran the Create Indoor Dataset tool and expected it to autopopulate with the data from my fgdb. I realized that you need to run the "to Indoor Dataset" but that this option only exists for CAD and BIM. 

Is using GIS data/layers just not an option for Indoor datasets? For our organization's purpose, we don't necessarily need z values because we just want to be able to use floor plan polygon data that is published to AGOL and use it with the floor filter widget. Previously, we were using the Smart Editor in Web App Builder but this is no longer an option.

Hi Evan, thanks for your detailed question! 

To convert existing GIS data representing floor plans into ArcGIS Indoors data, you can use a workflow that includes running the Import Features to Indoor Dataset tool (available at ArcGIS Pro 3.4 and later). That tool sets up the hierarchy of IDs that associate Facilities (buildings) to Levels (floors), and Levels to Units (rooms) and Details (walls, doors, etc.). The Floor Filter works with the ID fields in those feature classes. 

Here's what a high-level workflow might look like:

1. Run the Create Indoor Dataset tool on an empty geodatabase. Result is a dataset with feature classes that conform to the ArcGIS Indoors Information Model. 
2. Prepare your existing GIS data for import. The Import Features To Indoor Dataset tool takes polylines as input, so you can use the Polygon To Line (Data Management) tool to convert your room polygons to polylines. 
3. Run the Import Features To Indoor Dataset tool to import the prepared polyline data to the empty Indoor dataset.
4. To transfer attribute information from your original polygons to the newly-created Units features, you can use the Spatial Join tool with the Largest Overlap match option.

Hopefully this high-level workflow gives you an idea how you can proceed. Note that steps 2 through 4 would be done one facility+floor at a time, starting with the ground floor.
