Developing and refining ArcGIS Monitor metrics is almost a form of art. The way organizations choose thresholds, correlations, alerting strategies, and dashboard layouts often reflects deep operational understanding rather than something easily captured in documentation.
I would like to propose creating a public, community-driven repository under the Esri GitHub organization that serves as a pattern library for ArcGIS Monitor. The goal would be to curate real-world monitoring designs, metric collections, and analysis views that organizations are actively using in production.
This repository would focus primarily on:
Monitoring strategies and alerting philosophies
Metric collections grouped by operational purpose
Downloadable analysis views and dashboard examples
Explanations behind threshold decisions
Lessons learned from tuning and iteration
Rather than being architecture-centric, the emphasis would remain on operational monitoring patterns. However, to help users benchmark against similar environments, contributors could optionally include simple environment tags such as:
Deployment model
Workload profile
Hosting type (on-prem, cloud, or hybrid)
Approximate scale or user base
These tags would act as filters, allowing organizations to quickly identify monitoring designs that resemble their own environment without turning the repository into an architecture documentation resource.
Equally important, users should be able to respond to posted designs and share whether a configuration worked well in their environment, required tuning, or revealed unexpected behavior. This would ensure the repository remains a living knowledge base rather than static documentation.
Many observability ecosystems such as Prometheus, Grafana, and Kubernetes grew significantly because of shared configuration patterns and dashboard libraries. ArcGIS Monitor could benefit from a similar community-driven model, where implementation patterns are shared, discussed, and iteratively improved.
