Speed up jupyter notebooks in ArcGIS Pro

I appreciate the integration of Jupyter Notebooks into ArcGIS Pro, as it greatly enhances workflows. However, the performance is significantly slower compared to other platforms such as VS Code. Tasks like opening notebooks and modifying the environments have been consistently slow for a long time. Since upgrading to ArcGIS Pro 3.6.1, execution speed has also degraded to the point that it renders it useless.

If other applications can handle Jupyter Notebooks efficiently, ArcGIS Pro should be able to achieve similar performance. Improving speed and responsiveness would greatly enhance the user experience and productivity for data science and GIS workflows. For the time being I will experiment with the advice of how to work with aprx from outside ArcGIS pro.

As we note in the ArcGIS Ideas Submission Guidelines, performance issues are not a good fit for Idea Exchanges. Just like with bugs, performance issues should always be reported to Technical Support for further investigation.

@ValeriaChavezContacting technical support seldom leads to anything. With our setup our first technical support contact is the local distributor. Especially the case that opening them is slow, what are they supposed to do about it? It is not that they are not working, so I don't think it qualifies as a bug and the other option to workaround it is just not have notebooks in the project.

Since this idea is marked closed, I can't give it a kudos like I'd like. But since the comments are still able to be used, I'll go ahead an use them.

I agree that the performance of Jupyter Notebooks in ArcGIS Pro has been degrading with each new version. It takes me about three attempts to get a notebook to open, running the notebooks usually disables all UI features including the ArcGIS performance monitor which opens by keyboard shortcut, and the speed of processes I've used previously has slowed down significantly.

These issues are not really a bug considering the operations do complete and the notebooks eventually do open. Further, what is the use of a community if not to determine how widespread issues like performance reduction are? Knowing users with different environments or different versions are encountering the same issue is valuable in diagnosis. This is something the developers need to review to identify why multiple users are having issues with notebook performance degrading in the newer versions. What was changed from older versions of Pro compared to current versions that could impact Jupyter Notebooks?

Personally, I noticed the reduced performance after updating to ArcGIS Pro 3.4, which had multiple changes relating to notebooks:
