Some of the metric names are very long and take up space wherever they are used. If it's on a legend, I am not able to see all metric names at one time or the metric names won't display completely. If it's in the hover text, it won't display all of the name. If names are similar, it's difficult to tell which one is being viewed. You can generally tell (or know) what the metric is showing, so you don't need the full metric name. In one instance, I want to show 5 metrics on a chart. If I put the legend at the bottom, I have to scroll through 4 pages or maximize the width of the chart. If I put the legend on the side, there are a lot of extra characters in the name before I get to the important information. For instance, I don't need

when I could get by with
CUSTOM_NAME
This would not only help with charts. It would help anywhere metric names are used, such as reports or emails or even the metric detail page.
