Geometry Error Help

Question

I am trying to create/draw polylines in ArcGIS online published layers. Every time I try to draw a curve and then save the layer I get this error. Failed to create Distribution Main. General function failure [Error code: 1500. Description: Incorrect geometry type.. ]. I can draw the line but if I reshape to add a curve or draw a curved line I get that error. It allows for true curves in the settings. I've had calls with ESRI and they have not found the root of the issue. Has anyone ran in to this?

Yes, what you describe is a known bug. It occurs when working with Hosted Feature Layers in Pro. It is mentioned here: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-questions/feature-layer-inconsistently-not-editable-in/td-p/1500631

We can offer you some possible workarounds. One of these might work for you, depending on your particular workflow.

1. You could try editing in using the Freehand tool in Map Viewer.

2. In the post I linked to, some folks have found that this works: save the data in a local geodatabase, make your edits, and republish the layer.

3. Others have said that they were able to use the offline sync in Pro.

Hopefully one of these workarounds will meet your needs.

Hi Emily, when the line gets published it will reshape the line and add the additional vertices but I can't draw it. I also cannot freehand the line. I can't reshape a straight line to make a curve. We have previously been able to months ago but now we can't. I also have tried to edit vertices and if there is a curve any where in the line I can't save the newly edited line without the error. Curved lines cannot be drawn, shaped, or edited without receiving that error.

It sounds like you ran into the Bug mentioned above. True curves are partially supported in Online at this time -  though we're working to improve support with each update.

In the mean time, here are a couple of possible work arounds that might suit your needs, depending on the type of editing you need to do:

Have you tried the drawing the lines in ArcGIS Online?

1. One option is Map Viewer, where we recently added a new tool for drawing freehand polylines.

2. Another option you could try is ArcGIS Web Editor. It has a suite of drawing and editing tools including Split and Reshape.
