Displaying the parcel lines layer name without having to click the dropdown will help ensure the parcel lines are being created in the correct parcel type. The few times I’ve used COGO Reader I have accidentally created the lines in the wrong layer because all the template names are “ParcelLines.”

The drop-down is part of the feature template control. A layer can contain multiple feature templates.

Would it help if we persist the last used feature template? ArcGIS Pro will 'remeber' the last used feature template so you don't have to select it each time. Would that work?

Yes, persisting the last used feature template would be extremely helpful when entering multiple deeds of the same parcel type in succession — such as when processing a batch of easements once a month.

Would template memory persist through multiple parcel courses within a single deed?

Here’s an example of where I ran into issues:
I had a deed with two parcels. I changed the first parcel to conveyance lines and added it to the map. Then I worked on the second parcel — set the starting point, added it, created the seed, and built the parcel. Later, I realized the second parcel lines were mistakenly added to the simultaneous conveyance lines layer. I had to correct it using Change Parcel Type, but this could have been avoided if it were clearer which layer the parcel line template was targeting.

However, in most cases, I’m not entering multiple deeds in one sitting, so remembering which template I used days or weeks ago isn’t practical. I’m the main parcel editor at my organization, but if I’m out of office, another editor might need to step in. We share projects, and there’s currently no way to tell which template the last person used.

There have also been cases where I sent parcel lines to traverse, only to realize they were created under the wrong template/layer. Since the layer cannot be changed once in traverse, this requires backtracking and rework.

If I’m more likely to make mistakes using COGO Reader than entering a traverse manually, it’s not helping me improve efficiency.

With ArcGIS Pro 3.6 COGO Reader will remember the last used feature template. If you save your project it will save the last used template (same as traverse).

If you have multiple parcels in one deed, and you were to set your feature template to 'simultaneous conveyance' for 'parcel 1' - would you expect the feature template to also change to 'simultaneous conveyance' for 'parcel 2'?

If you want to share the project with another person, one way I can think of is to have 2 editing maps - each editor will work in their map, which will save their last used feature template. If you are using ArcGIS Enterprise, I would also look into using the relatively new 'portal projects'.

That's great to hear COGO Reader will be able to remember the last used feature template in ArcGIS Pro 3.6. It will be really helpful. It's a life saver with traverse, but traverse clearly show which layer the lines are being created in. With a quick glance, I know if I'm in the layer I want. It's not clear in COGO Reader.

Yes, I would expect the feature template to change for multiple parcels in one deed. I can't think of a single deed I've encountered where that would be false.
