Hello, my name is Tony, and I’m a GIS Analyst with a water agency based in the desert region of Southern California. Our agency’s mission is to monitor and manage local groundwater basins, supplementing them with imported water as needed.

One of my favorite projects I’m currently working on is supporting the development of a groundwater model and mapping the depth to bedrock. This will help our stakeholders better understand how water moves underground and allow us to plan more effectively to secure water for the future.

Southern California, especially our desert region, doesn't receive consistent rainfall each year. We may have a wet year followed by several dry ones, which can impact our water supplies. Our groundwater basins serve as the primary water source for those living and working in the area. To ensure a reliable supply, our agency responsibly supplements these basins with imported water from Northern California as needed.

GIS plays a crucial role in managing water resources. It’s used to map infrastructure, track and visualize data like rainfall, streamflow, and groundwater levels, and support the creation of a regional groundwater model.
