Import Excel data 255characters into a featuredataset

Question

Is there a way to either:

1. Import excel data with a field >255characters into a featuredataset/featureclass?

2. Create featuredataset/featureclass from excel data with a field >255characters ?

Joining the excel table, truncates fields with 255characters+.

I tried ArcPy where the excel is first converted to a table, but I believe that specific field was empty/or maybe truncated.

Thanks David for your reply and information.  I tried a couple of things, but was unsuccessful.  I got the data into a featureclass, but I could only bring in <255 characters for now.  Maybe in ArcPro, I will be more successful.  I have 2-days to make that jump.  Thank You again, David.

You can run Excel to Table to an intermediate table, then tweak the schema as needed, then copy that to the final location
